The Xbox Live kit costs $50, and that includes the first year of service. You also get the headset and several demos. It's a real bargain.

just to drag this back to life.....
What else do you have to pay after buying the kit? Just the subscription? And how much is that?
Thanks.

So far, nothing else (except for PSO). The one time price of $50 covers everything. In the future there might be charges for other things, but for now it's all included.

I think the new pricing scheme is 70 bucks, but you get the full version of MechAssault bundled in with it (as opposed to the original offering, which had a demo of a game called "Whacked"). I read that a couple days ago, but am not sure when it will be available. If I buy Live, this will be the deal I want.

There is pay content for Mech Assault now as well. Its 4.99 and well worth it.

is $5.99
You don't need the headset, although it certainly enhances things, and you don't need MechAssault.
Buy Top Spin and/or Project Gotham 2, and you'll get 2 free months of Live, with the option to cancel/renew before it expires. I got the headset as a standalone for $27.99, and MechAssault used for $10, and 2 free months of live with PJR2.
Of course, the best deal is the kit, which includes the whole year's worth of service, the headset, and MechAssault....IF you have the $$, and know for a fact you're gonna get the use out of it.
After the novelty of PGR2 online wore off, I haven't played much. I re-upped my subscription for another month, but I can cancel when I want. I'll probably keep it, just to d/l the free content in various games.
