In all, 15 countries will be represented in these two sections.

Dave Ratzlow, Director of Programming for BiFF, recognizes "this year’s narrative feature submissions were especially strong. I only wish we had room for more films. FILMMAKERS FORUM

NewFest’s Filmmakers Forum is a two-day series of panels and discussions bringing NewFest audiences together with filmmakers and industry to address a wide-range of topics stemming from NewFest 2006. Panels will examine the creative process of filmmaking, themes from films featured in the festival, and emerging trends in the community as reflected in film.

Saturday 6/10

1:00 – 2:30pm: Screening the Arts

This panel brings together filmmakers who have turned their cameras on queer artists in order to document the importance of artistic expression to the LGBT experience.

3:30 – 5:00pm:Rose Troche's Practical Guide to Filmmaking

Acclaimed writer/director/producer Rose Troche (Go Fish, The L Word) walks you step-by-step through the filmmaking process in an intensive workshop focusing on scene from script to screen.

6:00 – 7:30pm: NYC LGBT Film Case Studies

Join NYC based filmmakers with films in NewFest 2006 to discuss how they made their films, and the pros and cons of shooting an LGBT movie in the Big Apple.

Sunday 6/11

1:00 – 2:30pm: Masculinity in the Lesbian Community

As seen in NewFest 2006 films like Boy I Am and Gender Rebel, there’s a lot to say about FTMs and genderqueer people and how they do and don’t fit into the larger lesbian community.

3:30 – 5:00pm: Queering Film Genres

What is involved in translating a genre for LGBT audiences? Does a queer presence inevitably subvert the norms of the genre, or is it just cosmetic?

6:00 – 7:30pm: The History Channel

This panel discussion asks documentary filmmakers what attracts them to particular historical moments, and how their work challenges the way that LGBT history is written as they overturn conventional wisdom about who we are and how we got here.

FESTIVAL FOCUS

NewFest’s annual spotlight on thematic trends that emerged in this year’s selections; films on the cutting edge of LGBT life and culture.

Arts

These edifying and entertaining documentaries use film, the seventh art, to showcase artists from a number of other disciplines and their craft – from theatre to performance art, photography to hip hop, these works explore the creative process and the intersection of sexual identity.

>Beautiful Daughters, The Dark Matter of Mars, Eye on the Guy, Jack Mitchell, Lesbian Pulp-O-Rama Goes to Sweden!, The Life of Reilly, Lover Other, Pick Up the Mic

History

In addition to quite a few biographical portraits in this year’s festival that reveal the fascinating history of LGBT individuals, these four documentaries take a more inclusive look at historical events and movements that shaped the LGBT community as a whole.

>Fabulous!, The Fall of ’55, Mom’s Apple Pie, Screaming Queens

MTF

An unusually large number of films this year focus specifically or to a large extent on male-to-female transgendered subjects – a testament to the growing visibility of the trans community in recent years.

>20 Centimeters, Almost Myself, Beautiful Daughters, Between the Lines, Cruel and Unusual, Hotel Gondolin, How Do I Look, Memoirs of My Mental Illness, Paper Dolls, Screaming Queens

Youth

Though teenagers are often popular subjects for filmmakers, especially in coming out narratives, this year many films focus on high-school aged LGBT protagonists – each very different in story and tone from the next, their young subjects nevertheless all experience conflict and confusion due in large part to their sexuality.

AUTISM SPEAKS

PUBLIC SERVICE CAMPAIGN ADS TO BE FEATURED AT
11TH ANNUAL NANTUCKET FILM FESTIVAL IN JUNE

-- Raising Awareness About a Growing Health Crisis --

(NEW YORK, NY – May 16, 2006) – Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of autism and raising money to fund autism research, announced today that its new public service advertisements, produced in conjunction with the Ad Council, will be screened throughout the 11th annual Nantucket Film Festival, June 14-18. The PSA’s will be shown prior each feature film shown at the festival.

The multi-year Autism Speaks/Ad Council PSA campaign, which launched last month, is aimed at the general public. It stresses that autism is more common than people think (1 in 166 children is now diagnosed with autism) and encourages families to learn the signs of autism and talk to their doctor if they suspect their child is not meeting developmental milestones. The campaign was created pro bono by advertising agency BBDO and is running across all media platforms, including print, broadcast and cable TV, radio and the internet.

“We’re so grateful to the Nantucket Film Festival for providing this unique forum to increase awareness about the growing prevalence of autism,“ said Suzanne Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks. “Parents need to be aware of the early warning signs of autism and talk to their doctor as soon as possible if they suspect a developmental delay. Early intervention is our best weapon against autism.”

"The Nantucket Film Festival is committed to this joint effort with Autism Speaks in bringing autism to the forefront of public awareness. We welcome the opportunity to support their heartfelt efforts," said Jill Burkhart, NFF Executive Director.

About Autism

Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 166 children, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

About Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of the growing autism epidemic and to raising money to fund scientists who are searching for a cure. It was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright. Bob Wright is Vice Chairman and Executive Officer, General Electric, and Chairman and CEO, NBC Universal. Autism Speaks and the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR) recently combined operations, bringing together two of the leading organizations dedicated to accelerating and funding biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism spectrum disorders; to increasing awareness of the nation’s fastest growing developmental disorder; and to advocating for the needs of affected families. About Nantucket Film Festival

The NFF was founded in 1996 to spotlight screenwriters, screenwriting and storytelling in today's cinema. The festival takes place over five days in June on the idyllic island of Nantucket, MA.

Now in its eleventh year, NFF has become a prestigious annual event within the international film industry. Screening over 50 feature-length and short films in all genres that highlight the art of storytelling, the NFF is significant attraction that draws over ten thousand attendees, screenwriters, producers, agents and development executives each year.

Screenwriting is further explored through panel discussions, a screenplay competition, an emerging screenwriter's mentorship with the Screenwriters Colony, an educational program for teens and community beach screenings. The Festival also hosts the popular evening of Late Night Storytelling (hosted by Peter Farrelly and Anne Meara and past stories told by Jim Carrey, Tina Fey, Mos Def and Paul Rudd) in addition to screenplay staged readings.

Past staged readings have included the hilarious SHOWSTOPPER by Anthony Barille & Geoffrey Nauffts including the talents of Ben Stiller and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei. Last year’s reading, SPECTACLE, Part One of the Mark Rosen Chroniclesby Stacy Weiss and Dan Chariton was directed by Ben Stiller and the cast included: Macaulay Culkin, Amy Sedaris, David Krumholtz, Lake Bell, Robert Sean Leonard, Ben Stiller and more. The coveted screenplay A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES by Steven Soderbergh and Scott Kramer was the centerpiece staged reading of NFF 2003 and featured Will Ferrell in the starring role with Alan Cumming, Mos Def, and Rosie Perez.

The NFF has been a showcase for some of the top independent films of the last decade. The festival was one of the first to find and platform such films as: The Full Monty, Next Stop Wonderland and Girlfight. The 11th annual festival will embrace the narrative power of documentary films, starting with the Opening Night film Al Franken: God Spoke.

Al Franken: God Spoke is a cinema vÈritÈ pursuit of Al Franken from his highly publicized feud with Bill O’Reilly to his relentless campaign against George Bush and the Right Wing during the 2004 election, and beyond. Mr. Franken will be on island to support his film, reveal more of his political future, as well as participate along with Brian Williams in the special program IN HIS OWN WORDS: Brian Williams on Hurricane Katrina.

In this program, Brian Williams shares his experience of Hurricane Katrina -- from his arrival inside the Superdome before the hurricane to the chaos that followed. His impressions of that first week create a moving and devastating portrait of a catastrophe, an abandoned people, and an indictment of the failure of government response. The 27-minute film will be followed by a half-hour interview with Brian Williams, conducted by Al Franken.

In correlation with the Centerpiece Screening of their film Ground Truth, Focus Features has planned a special press reception in honor of US troops, hosted by Focus Feature's producer and CEO James Schamus. Ground Truth tells the stories of a half-dozen American heroes – ordinary men and women who heeded the call for military service in Iraq – as it charts recruitment and training, combat, homecoming, and the struggle to reintegrate with families and communities. With several US troops in attendance, the reception that precedes the screening will provide an invaluable forum for first-hand accounts of the war in Iraq.

In addition to the events above and the signature events that have helped secure the Nantucket Film Festival as the premiere Screenwriters’ Festival, there will be several new programs at this year’s festival showcasing the "screenwriter" including "Iconoclasts" with Academy- Award winning Brokeback Mountain scribe Diana Ossana.

The Best Writer/Director Award Jury for the 2006 Nantucket Film Festival will comprise of Anthony Bregman (producer of Friends With Money and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Marc Levin (director of Slam and Protocols of Zion), and Henry-Alex Rubin (director of Murderball).

In collaboration with "This and That" Films, this year’s staged reading is COUP DE TAT written by Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse. COUP DE TAT follows sixteen-year-old Tatiana, a rebel-without-a-cause, who makes a Latin American dictator, Hector Vivas, her pen pal. When Vivas is overthrown, he takes refuge in Tatiana’s suburban garage and Tatiana learns what being a rebel is truly about.

The celebrities participating the staged reading include Jimmy Smits, Steven Webber, Mary Kay Place, Nathan Corddry, Anna Belknap, Michael Mastro, Nadia Dajani, and Michael Cera.

New Programs and Venues at the 2006 Nantucket Film FestivalÆ :

ICONOCLASTS

This new NFF event will bring together leading screenwriters, directors, actors, editors and other creators in the filmmaking process. The original series on Sundance Channel pairs two leading creative innovators from fields such as literature, architecture, music, journalism, food, fashion and film. "Iconoclasts" presents intimate, unpredictable portraits of today’s leading innovators and risk-takers in their respective fields. In the same tradition, NFF will present a pair of creative visionaries, with one acting as a guide into the world of the other, in order to explore their creative process, inspirations and passions.

Guests include: Diana Ossana (Brokeback Mountain), Tom McCarthy (writer/director The Station Agent), and Campbell Scott (actor/director, Big Night, Off the Map)

NEW PANEL: A Film is Written Three Times

Among the programs dedicated to screenwriting, the Nantucket Film Festival introduces a new panel called "A Film is Written Three Times" to emphasize that screenwriting doesn’t begin and end with the script. A film is written a second time by the director and a third time in the editing room.

The panelists include Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Writers and Director, Half Nelson), Neil Burger (Writer/Director, The Illusionist), Jay Craven (Writer/Director, Disappearances), and Goran Dukic (Writer/Director, Wristcutters: A Love Story).

NEW VENUES:

In response to the record-breaking sales and attendance at last year’s festival, the Nantucket Film Festival has also added some new and larger venues, expanding its stretch and accessibility across the island. New for this year will be the 450-seat tent on the lawn of The White Elephant. The tent will be home to "Late Night Storytelling", one of the audience favorites among NFF’s special events. Also announced, the beautiful Sconset Casino will serve as one of NFF’s screening venues while the Dreamland Theater is under construction.

As previously announced, the Closing Night film will be the documentary The Heart of the Game from director Ward Serrill.

‘BY THE PEOPLE’ TO PREMIERE AT JACKSON HOLE FILM FESTIVAL

Pre-Selected As One Of The Festival’s Top Five Documentaries

“You will never again take your right to vote for granted.”

Screening at the Mainstage Theater at the Jackson Hole Film Festival

New York, NY - May 30. 2006 – By the People, a new behind-the-scenes documentary that exposes who and what it really takes to put on an American election, will world premiere at the Jackson Hole Film Festival. The film premieres on Thursday, June 8th, with an encore screening Sunday, June 11th; both screenings will be held at the Mainstage Theater. Ahead of the festival, By The People has been selected as one of the top five finalists that will compete in the Best Documentary category.

To view the trailer visit http://bythepeople-themovie.com

In By The People, first-time director Malindi Fickle, armed with a storyteller’s sensibility and a biting sense of humor, lets the words and emotions speak for themselves as the film’s subjects battle against time, lack of resources, and political obstacles to get the polls open and the votes counted.

By The People unfolds over the 11 days leading up to the 2004 Presidential election, following a young County Clerk in Marion County, Indianapolis, her small crew of government employees, and the dedicated volunteer poll workers, as they race to prepare for one of the most anticipated and divided elections in American history. Unflinchingly honest and unexpectedly funny, the film captures average Americans of all political stripes working side by side to insure that everyone in Indianapolis--including quadriplegics and prisoners awaiting trial--are allowed to exercise their fundamental right to vote.

Fickle was inspired to begin shooting after her brother Tim, a deputy clerk in the office profiled in the film, told her about the extraordinary effort that goes into getting the entire voting process ready, staffed, managed, and closed on each and every Election Day.

“Everyone, including myself, thinks they know what it takes to put on an election. The truth is, most people have no idea. Making this film, we witnessed ‘democracy in the wild.’ This is the story of government employees everywhere, almost all of whom face the herculean task of putting on an election with little public support and even fewer funds." said Fickle.

By the People is not about political scandal, media hype, election slogans, or partisan division. It is the story of real people, from all ages and political backgrounds, struggling to hold one of America’s most basic freedoms together.

Screening at the Mainstage Theater at the Jackson Hole Film Festival:

About the Filmmaker:
Malindi Fickle is the director and executive producer of By The People. By the People is her feature film directing debut, and the first release from her production company Hyperbaric Productions. A director, producer and actor in New York City for over fourteen years, Fickle’s directing and producing credits include: “Savior” at the Manhattan Ensemble Theater, produced by Beth O’Neal; “Escape From Happiness”; and the world premiere of “A Floating Roof Above Your Head”. As an actress, her feature films include: Sharon Pollack’s Everything Relative (Sundance Film Festival); Jacklight (Cannes Critic’s Selection) and St. Andrew’s Girls (TVA Films). Fickle graduated Summa Cum Laude from New York University.

NEW YORK, NY (July 5, 2006) — The 7th Annual New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) announces its exciting line-up of films and events representing the best in new U.S. Latino and Latin American filmmaking. This year’s festival features some of the hottest Latin talent in the industry, including Roselyn Sanchez, Diego Luna, and Edward James Olmos. The festival runs from July 25-30 at several theaters in New York, including Regal Union Square Stadium 14 (Broadway, at 13th Street), The Florence Gould Hall (55 East 59th Street), The Lighthouse International, Ames Auditorium (111 East 59th Street), and the Imaginasian Theater (239 East 59th Street).

More than just a film festival, NYILFF showcases over 60 domestic and international feature films, documentaries, and shorts and features special events like Dominican Night, Cinema Under the Stars, NYILFF New Music Showcase, NYILFF Vanguard and NYILFF Family Weekend. The six-day schedule of events highlights the full range of Latino culture, with events for every segment of the community.

“It has always been our mission to provide opportunity and a supportive atmosphere for Latino filmmakers from around the world to showcase their work,” said NYILFF executive director Calixto Chinchilla. “This year’s offerings address major issues affecting Latinos today and help to spread awareness of Latino culture and contributions to American society.”

NYILFF is honored to have HBO return as the presenting sponsor. “As a company, HBO has been strongly committed to supporting and promoting the best of the creative Latino community for many years,” said Adrion Porter, director of Market Development for HBO. "Our long-term relationship with the NYILFF, especially with the Latino Filmmaker Competition, speaks to that commitment and to the pivotal role that the festival has been playing in the development and promotion of Latino talent.”

Opening this year’s festival is director Carlos Bolado’s SOLOS DIOS SABE (ONLY GOD KNOWS), starring Diego Luna, Alica Braga, Jose Maria Yazpik, and Cecilia Suarez. 21st International Week of Film Critics
August 31st – September 9th, 2006

The Venice Biennale
and the National Union of Italian Film Critics
present

the programme of the 21st International Week of Film Critics

Inaugurated by a homage to the great Otto Preminger, on the 100th anniversary of his birth and on the 20th anniversary of his death, this year the International Week of Film Critics is curiously marked by the theme of "disappearance," starting from its opening film, Preminger's Bunny Lake is Missing (1965), on the mysterious kidnapping of a little girl in 1960s London. Yet if we look closely, in all the wonderful films of this 21st edition of the Critics Week, the seven titles in competition and the closing film, we find – perhaps by chance but with a strong symbolic value – this constant of search and disappearance: the quest for a new identity, the traces of one's own past, of a non-place where disappear, the re-finding and eventually the loss of the illusion of love, the disappearance of a father that had been a point of reference during a difficult childhood.

A symbolic coincidence, we were saying. In our passionate search for the best international debut film, a goal that is once again the Critics Week''s unwavering mission, we accidentally stumbled upon a theme that ultimately colours our relationship with Italian cinema as well. Faced with an undeniable production crisis in our film industry, which resulted in drastic investment rationing and an evident decrease in the number of films produced (first films in particular), as we wait hopefully for the necessary steps to be taken to unblock this empasse, what could we have chosen? We certainly do not want to demonise young Italian cinema. On the contrary, the critics' role is to discover, present and promote trends, languages and forms of overcoming cultural homologation. Thus we chose to include, as the only Italian film, a small, self-financed work shot on video by four young people full of ideas, a true sense of cinema and a few hundred euros. Necessarily out of competition (for technical reasons as well), as our closing event, the film nevertheless receives the visibility it deserves and we are able to properly conclude a selection that, in a year of a proliferation and competition among events and festivals, and of more or less natural budget reductions, has become increasingly more of a gamble. And have we won? It is up to you to decide.

STREET THIEF

AT THE 2006 LOCARNO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

This riveting film follows a professional thief Caspar Karr as he commits burglaries on the streets of Chicago. The filmmakers provide a fascinating and disturbing glimpse into Carr’s intricate planning process, from casing stores to tapping phones to drilling safes open, all the while letting the filmmakers document his every move. As Carr drags the filmmakers deeper into his murky world of disguises and sinister surprises, the line between documentarian and criminal accomplice becomes increasingly blurred.

A filmmaker and his crew attempt to bury themselves
in the glowing realm of Port-Royal and Jansenism and
thus sketch out in fragments a different 17th century
vision, oddly familiar and reminiscent of Pascal, Racine

precious readings, interviews and work notes all
mingle, but the historical quest gradually gives
way to dizziness. From baroque-like flights of fancy
to hysterical convulsions – the whole film changes
dramatically and irreparably comes up against the
unanswered question of Grace.

Culminates in The United Nations’ International Day of Peace

This year, for the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, the FOURTH ANNUAL GLOBAL PEACE FILM FESTIVAL in Orlando, Florida (September 14th -21st 2006) will showcase exciting and important international films and host events and community outreach programs to further the goal of peace on earth.

With an overall theme, “The Many Paths to Peace”, GPFF will screen powerful stories from around the world which help expand the definition of peacemaking as something that can be worked on daily in the personal lives of individuals and communities. Films whose themes explore issues on the environment, racism, community, family, conflict resolution, the role of women, and civil rights will screen at Rollins College’s Tiedke Hall, University of Central Florida’s Communication Building and the Ying Academic Center in downtown Orlando. The festival also will present topical and engaging panels at the Enzian Theatre, films and events at the Orlando Science Center and outreach programs throughout the community.

“The Festival grows every year, this year with traveling festivals visiting Beppu City, Japan, Cyprus, New York City and Los Angeles,” relates Nina Streich, GPFF’s Executive Director, “The support of United Nations NGOs and every segment of the Orlando community has been wonderful over the years and we look forward to our best festival yet.”

GPFF’s Artistic Director Kelly DeVine adds, “We found many compelling stories reflective of the ways in which people hope for peace, work for peace and achieve peace within themselves and for their communities.”

The Opening Night film is the US Premiere of Martin Koolhaven’s Schnitzel Paradise, (Netherlands, 2005), a ribald, cross-cultural love story of a young Moroccan immigrant who defies his father’s wishes for a traditional career by working as a dishwasher in a noisy, bustling restaurant. He falls in love with the owner’s wealthy niece surrounded by a rowdy international cast of characters.

GPFF will close out its festival at Rollins College with Down the Rabbit Hole (USA, 2006), the exciting extension of the cult classic, What the Bleep Do We Know? that continues to explore the link between quantum mechanics, neurobiology, human consciousness and day-to-day reality. A special series of environmental films along with a special screening of Cosmic Africa willbe a highlight of the “Cocktails on the Cosmos” event at the Orlando Science Center, with four floors of hands-on exhibits, giant screen films and stargazing in the observatory.

By the trip’s end they learn to understand the degree to which they truly love one another. The Chances of the World Changing (USA, 2006) follows a writer’s life as he rescues endangered species of turtles destined for Chinatown restaurants, eventually housing thousands of turtles in his New York City penthouse apartment. Refugee All Stars (USA, 2005) follows a band of refugees from Sierra Leone who become singing stars and later return to their homeland, ravaged by war. Simone Duarte’s En Route to Baghdad: Sergio Vieira de Mello, (Brazil/USA, 2004)tells the life story of the diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, the peacemaker chosen by Kofi Annan who was killed in Baghdad during a heroic mission. THE 6TH ANNUAL

HIGHFALLS FILM FESTIVAL

NOVEMBER 8-13, 2006

CELEBRATING THE WORK OF WOMEN BEHIND THE CAMERA

AGNIESZKA HOLLAND, FAMKE JANSSEN, LAUREN SHULER DONNER,

STELLA PENCE, SHIRLEY KNIGHT

Among This Year’s Dynamic Honorees & Guests

The 2006 HIGH FALLS FILM FESTIVAL celebrates its sixth wonderful year of honoring the cinematic achievements of women around the world. This unique and exciting festival will take place in Rochester, New York, November 8-13, 2006. The Festival has grown exponentially to become one of the vital cultural assets in Western New York. This international festival of films made with women taking an integral place behind the camera draws people from around the country and globe to this stimulating event, which takes place at the historic, five-screen Little Theatre and the Dryden Theatre at the International Museum of Photography and Film at George Eastman House.

HighFalls is a festival with a difference - its mission. Susan B. Anthony lived in Rochester, as did George Eastman. The creators of High Falls chose to honor the founders of the women’s movement with a program that presents a wide variety of films, focusing on the achievements of women in the industry and to help correct the imbalance of employment for women (as Susan B. might have) in many areas.

While highlighting the work of a woman behind the camera on each film selected, the High Falls Film Festival programs movies for all audiences. Artistic Director Catherine Wyler and Festival Director & Co-Programmer Ruth Cowing plumbed the best films of 2006 for the prestigious specialty spots in the HighFalls schedule, bringing a more varied, eclectic and exciting list of films to festival audiences than ever before. 2006 Festival movies range from the lush costume drama to the most original, and comedic, monster movie in years, to American indies showcasing new talents in both narrative and documentary, not to mention three highly-touted Oscar contenders for Foreign Language Film.

From the Opening Night film, Agnieszka Holland’s COPYING BEETHOVEN, starring Ed Harris and Diane Kruger, to the Gala Centerpiece presentation of THE LIVES OF OTHERS, the German Oscar contender that was an Official Selection at both the Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals, and through to the Closing Night presentation of the 1928 charming silent film classic, LONESOME, directed by Paul Fejus (and presented with a live score by the famed ALLOY ORCHESTRA), the High Falls Film Festival will be a very exciting place to be.

Each year, the Festival honors exceptional women in the industry with the prestigious Susan B. Anthony “Failure is Impossible” Award, for women in the film industry who have persevered in their careers and triumphed over difficulties. AMERICAN BLACKOUT (Documentary, US), director Ian Inaba delves into the systematic disenfranchisement of African-American voters in 2001. The film’s heroine, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, whose investigation of the infamous Florida election as well as her blatant criticism of the war in Iraq has made her the target of relentless right-wing venom, does not waver in her crusade for exposing racist policies, no matter how troubled the waters. Congresswoman McKinney will join us at HighFalls along with the film’s producer Anastasia King.

AVENUE MONTAIGNE (Narrative, France), a sparkling and witty romantic comedy by director Daniele Thompson, is a classic fairy tale starring Cecile de France as a young woman whose arrival in Paris from the provinces puts her in the path of a circus of eccentrics, ranging from the brilliant to the hilariously bizarre.

THE CATS OF MIRIKITANI (Documentary, US),is a documentation of the ubiquitous Soho street artist, Jimmy Mirikitani, and the tempestuous events that shaped his life, which included not only being interred at Tule Lake Camp, the destruction of his family in Hiroshima, and his life as an elderly, homeless artist, whom in 2001, and on 9/11, when the neighborhood was so engulfed by smoke and ash, she invited into her apartment. COPYING BEETHOVEN (Narrative, US/Germany), is the HighFalls opener, directed by Susan B. Anthony “Failure Is Impossible” Award winner, Agnieszka Holland. Ed Harris delivers a sexy, bawdy, passionate performance as the tempestuous genius composer in this richly imagined tale about Beethoven and the ambitious young copyist of his Ninth Symphony, Anna (the beautiful Diane Kruger). Agnieszka Holland will join us at HighFalls to present her film.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL (Documentary, US), is the story of Father O’Grady, a pillar of his community, and a notorious pedophile. Director Amy Berg was actually able to persuade O’Grady to participate in the making of this film, along with several of his victims. At press time, this film is causing an earthquake within the Los Angeles Diocese and may well change history with its searing indictment concerning the practices and politics of the Catholic Church.

GOODBYE LIFE(Narrative, Iran), The first feature by Iranian filmmaker Ensieh Shah-Hosseini is based on her eight-year-long experience as a journalist during the 1980’s Iran/Iraq war. A profoundly anti-war film, GOODBYE LIFE is unsparing in depicting death and destruction. But it also shows Iranian villagers living in the war zone determined to preserve the rituals of daily life, even when a wedding celebration turns into a funeral.
THE HOST (Narrative, South Korea), Director Bong Joon-Ho’s smart, touching and funny film is the story of a monster who emerges from the Han River following a U.S. doctor’s dumping of chemicals on the highway. He immediately creates havoc, kidnapping a girl in the process. The government’s comic mishandling of the crisis, as well as the girl’s wildly dysfunctional family, who set out to save her, are priceless...

KING LEOPOLD’S GHOST (Documentary, US), documents that during the Cold war, the CIA was instrumental in the coup that brought the military thug Mobuto to power in Congo. Director Pippa Scott tells this atrocious history through archival photographs and film With narration by Don Cheadle, Alfre Woodard, and James Cromwell. KZ (Documentary, UK), British documentarian Rex Bloomstein focuses on the picturesque Austrian town of Mauthausen, once a site of a concentration camp and now a tourist destination. He exposes the myriad attitudes of those who pass through, from horror and empathy to denial and compartmentalization, and in so doing exposes the larger truth of how we, in the present, respond to the horror of this historic massive extermination.

LIFE AFTER TOMORROW (Documentary, US),chronicles the stories of the young girls who got their start in show business during the original five-year run of the hit musical Annie, among them Sarah Jessica Parker, Molly Ringwald and MSNBC anchor Dara Brown. It focuses on those whose early burst of fame did not blossom into the careers they imagined, and their highly personal interviews talk about their lives on both sides of the celebrity fence… The film’s co-Producer/co-Director Julie Stevens will be representing her film at HighFalls.

LITTLE RED FLOWERS (Narrative, China/Italy), From legendary underground director Zhang Yuan comes a contemporary parable about the complexities of being compelled to “fit in” to a society that requires it, as seen through the eyes of young boy entering school for the first time.
THE LIVES OF OTHERS (Narrative, Germany), It’s 1984 in East Berlin, and a drab drone from the Stasi (the East German secret police) is ordered to find something - anything - incriminating in the life of the country’s most popular playwright. Germany’s Oscar contender is a brilliantly made thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.

MEN AT WORK (Narrative, Iran), four middle-aged friends returning from a ski trip in Tehran find a strange object at the edge of a cliff. It might be an Easter Island-like stone statue or a fossilized tree, but in any case, its phallic monumentality presents a challenge and they become obsessed with literally overthrowing it. A hilarious comedy of machismo emerges as the men strategize, enlist passersby, and risk life and limb in this absurd project.

THE NIGHT OF THE WHITE PANTS (Narrative, US), brings Tom Wilkenson (Max), the patriarch of a wildly dysfunctional family, who survives a heart-attack, a failing business, and an acrimonious divorce with enough adventurous spirit intact to explore Dallas’s punk underground scene with his ambitious daughter (Selma Blair) and her maverick web designer/rocker boyfriend (Nick Stahl.) The cast which also includes Laura Jordan as a punkette who captures Max’s fancy and a warm, ironic Francis Fisher as one of his ex-wives, is first-rate. Director Amy Talkington will be on hand to present her film.

OPEN WINDOW (Narrative, US)starring Robin Tunney and Joel Edgerton, explores how a marriage is affected by the aftermath of rape. With fine supporting performances by Cybill Shepherd, Shirley Knight, and Elliott Gould. The film’s Director/Writer Mia Goldman, along with actress Shirley Knight will be on hand at HighFalls.

THE PLAY, set in a remote Turkish village, is a heartwarming documentary about a strong-willed peasant woman who decides that her story and that of her women friends is the stuff of theater. Enlisting the aid of several townspeople, she sees her vision through, and in the process changes the dynamics of the village forever.

RENAISSANCE (Animated Feature, France/UK/Luxembourg), Set in Paris in 2054, RENAISSANCE pays homage to the futuristic noir vision of METROPOLIS and BLADE RUNNER, marrying science fiction with extraordinary digital animation to present a world beyond imagination.

SHOOT THE MESSENGER (Narrative, UK), a highly controversial project when it aired on the BBC, is a brilliant, flamboyant social satire that fearlessly takes on issues of black identity and self-hatred in middle-class modern day London. It is also the winner of the BBC Dennis Potter Screenwriting Award. The film will be represented by Director Ngozi Onwurah.

TEN CANOES (Narrative, Australia), is set in the distant past of tribal times, where a man, Dayindi, covets the wife of his elder brother. To teach him the proper way, he is told a story from the mythical past, a story of a wrong love, kidnapping, sorcery, bungling mayhem and revenge gone wrong.

THE TREATMENT (Narrative, US),Starring Susan B. Anthony “Failure is Impossible” Award winner Famke Janssen,is a tightly woven story about Jake Singer, an anxious schoolteacher in New York City, and the psychoanalysis he undergoes subsequently from Dr. Ernesto Morales (Ian Holm), therapist from hell. Add Ms. Janssen as a beautiful socialite widow into the mix, Jake’s life becomes a veritable boomerang between what is allegedly “real” and the overworkings of an overanalytical mind. Production Designer Edwige Geminel and Actress Famke Janssen will be on hand to represent the film.

UNFOLDING FLORENCE: THE MANY LIVES OF FLORENCE BROADHURST (Documentary, Australia),is the spirited and highly original documentary by acclaimed director Gillian Armstrong about the many lives of one larger-than-life woman: flamboyant Australian design pioneer Florence Broadhurst.

WHAT REMAINS (Documentary, US), Steven Cantor follows his award-winning short film about photographer, Sally Mann, with a feature that covers the extended period of Mann’s landscape photos, her death and decay series, and her recent self-portraits. The film shows Mann at work behind the camera and also allows her opportunities to talk at length about her work process and how she arrives at a subject that will sustain her for years. The Film’s Composer Mary Lorson will be in HighFalls.

WHEN I CAME HOME (Documentary, US),is a film about a surprising and unfortunate population: over 300,000 homeless veterans; those who served in Vietnam and those returning from the current war in Iraq. It reveals a failing system and the veteran’s struggle to survive after returning from war-a struggle often as traumatic as the battlefield they’ve just left. The film’s subject Herold Noel and Producer Nancy Roth will represent the film.

Every year the High Falls Film Festival presents an example of the work of the Women’s Film Preservation Fund, which preserves American films in which women have had significant creative input. It has preserved over 40 films, and is the only fund of its kind in the world.

SPECIAL SELECTIONS:

CONEY (Documentary, US), a quick jaunt through the Coney Island area at all times of the day and night, in all seasons, is a prime example of the early work of Frank and Caroline Mouris, collaborators in film and life for over forty years. Reviewer Elliott Stein wrote: This “animated documentary” is a pixilated “grand jete”…five minutes if earned emotion never before provided by so brief a work.

LONESOME (Narrative, US),is a classic charmer from 1928, the transitional period between “silents” and “talkies”, and will be presented at HighFalls with the renowned Alloy Orchestra providing the soundtrack. This Paul Fejus romantic comedy about two lonely people, Jim and Mary, who live in the same building, work in the same factory, but have never met, both hear an advertisement for Coney Island, and both hop on a bus for an amusement park adventure…the film that touched off 1974’s Telluride Festival, LONESOME represents the height of the silent film industry, and tells a delicious and universal love story. Telluride Film Festival co-founder Stella Pence will be on hand to introduce the film.

NewFest 2007 - Call for Submissions

Since 1988, NewFest: The New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Film Festival has been one of the most comprehensive forums of international LGBT film/video, and an important exhibition platform for independent film/video makers. Each year, NewFest provides a professional and public context for the presentation of innovative and challenging work that reflects the broad range of practice and ideas found in contemporary media.

Submissions of films/videos by, about, or of interest to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, or transgendered persons are now being accepted for NewFest 2007, which will take place May 31-June 10. In addition, submitted works under 30 minutes by NYC area makers are eligible for programming in NewFest's new monthly Local Shorts Showcase at the IFC Center!
