The Dictator

I loved it. has anyone else seen it? I thought it was a lot better than the reviews made it out to be. I thought the stupidity and over-the-topness was done perfectly. I actually like his completely scripted material better than his docu-style material(for the most part). I Still think bruno is his best, but this is still a hilarious movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but I was surprised how ballsy the studios were by putting a joke as (wonderfully) offensive as "Bad news...It's a girl...Where's the trash can?" in the COMMERCIAL.

if you liked that, it gets better, the movie is offensive as hell, but it's done so well. the people who will get offended by this are stuck-up conservative people and stupid people, other-wise it's a dark twisted great time.

I'll wait for his next movie where he covers his face with soot and plays a rapping pimp, followed by the next one where he wears some fake buck teeth and plays a chinaman.

The movie might be good, but it would be nice to see him try making movies where he isn't dressing up as and playing the character of a stupid foreigner.

yes, like I said his formula is getting a little old, he seems to use these movies as his personal soapbox, I'd love him to branch off for sure.

I'll probably wait for this to come to the dollar theater down the road from me. Money is tight right now.

By the way, BrundleFly, your screenname is awesome.

it kinda bugs me though that baron cohen isn't channeling his brilliant scripts better, i like the review saying he needs a better director, I couldn't agree more, it could've done without so much of the gross out slap-stick shtick.

The joke just seems too obvious. I'm sure it has plenty of enjoyable moments but I can't get up the interest to see it.

I'm a big Baron Cohen fan (and I still think that Borat is hilarious - fuck off) but I can't say that I'm too interested in The Dictator. It seems... lazy for a comedic talent of Baron Cohen's calibre.

This feels like Simon Pegg/Nick Frost and Paul.

I thought Paul was a respectable fun film and better than some comedies that got a lot more praise last year, like Bridesmaids.

Parts of it were solid, but it was far too long (like any film Apatow is involved with.)

Cohen is smart to keep his films short and to-the-point.

That is the reason why I won't Redbox this movie at all. She's on my list of those whose movies I avoid for their presence alone regardless of how good they're supposed to be.

She's in the movie all of about 30 seconds. Her scene in the trailer is her only scene.

It's decent. Some laughs, but nothing close to great. 6/10

A few laughs, but not enough - very predictable and Borat is a billion times funnier.

4/10

This is probably Cohen's best, if not most obvious, film. Very funny.

Yea, the more I think about it, the more I liked it. It just really never slowed down at all, one of the quickest hour and a halves ever. I'm curious how busy was your screening and how did you audience react? I had one of the strangest endings ever with people both booing and clapping, it was pretty bizarre.

B-

A little thin, a bit too Austin Powers'ish, but otherwise a fun 90mins.

- Sharp humour sprinkled around, always leaving a scene on top with a zinger into the segue.
- Consistency... usually with these types of comedies, they abandon their premise & ***** out- they refreshingly stuck with what they opened with from a to z here.

- A touch too polite I suppose. Sure it was racist, mostly towards everyone who isn't an Arab lol, but it skated along without being bold enough to make a point. I guess that's 2012 PC humour for you. (I bet the helicopter scene was 100x funnier on paper during their readings- it still works but it just feels too silly)

Sacha needs/deserves some meatier dramas while he's still in his prime- he could be a BAMF like a DDL lite or something I bet.

Finally saw it. I really wish it was more offensive, and the movie isn't nearly as quotable as Borat or Bruno, but I enjoyed it. Really wish it was way more offensive though.

It's decent. Sacha was great, it was best when the weapon's advisor was in his scenes. The helicopter scene was the best. 3.5/5
