The 'General Discussion' section

This probably isn't anything new, but the General Discussion section just seems to be one massive mess. Why isn't the separation between general discussion of movies and 'anything else under the sun', by creating two subforums?

Hi Futuring,

I'm just a user here, like yourself. I am not a moderator nor am I an administrator. But, I can try to answer your question.

Already there is an "Off Topic" forum, originally created to shift non-movie traffic out of GD and into there. However, it turns out that the posters in each of the forums often tend to keep to the one forum. This makes each of the forums a kind-of "community on its own."

Because of this, each of the "communities" tend to talk about all the things people talk about with people they know, including politics, videogames, movies, etc., etc. I'm not exactly sure why GD has the volume they do, but that's an "active" community at work, and, I think, most of the people posting to non-movie threads in GD would not be happy in OT.

I hope that answers your question. Be well,

-Rexkix

There's no spam in this thread, but there was spam in the forum that had lingering effects on the Forums page. A Master Kitty bump of a decent thread gets rid of those ill-effects.

It's cr@p to be honest. The whole site is a bloated mess, and a nightmare to navigate. Off Topic stuff in General Discussion is just a small part of the problem. Mods should stamp it out, and move non-movie stuff to Off Topic, no arguments.

I rarely visit this site now. It's a shadow of it's former self. Even the colour scheme is terrible. Green and... blue? Who thought up that one?

Metacritic is a much more pleasant user experience.

Very informative, Rexkix. I have visited these forums over the years and have only recently actually joined. I have found this assessment of GD being a "community" all too true. However, I tend to think it detracts from film discussion, primarily because it is far too generalized and lends itself to off-topics and the all too familiar quips, picture posting responses, and incessant daily small talk. Most of the "discussions" feel little more than text messages on a cell phone, making it little different than something like Facebook or an internet chat room. Matter of fact, GD reads as though it is being used in leiu of Facebook, or Myspace, or whatever. I mean, if you take a look at some of the subscribers, you can see some of them run upwards of 20, 30, 40,000 posts. With all those postings you wonder if they've posted anything other than a humorous one-liner, or why they feel the need to respond with their two cents to everyone's comments. I've been to a number of forums on a number of websites and even 20,000 seems a God-awful lot. With these kinds of numbers, it makes the linear, answer and response (and response and response) dialogue difficult to navigate and finding actual content a real chore.

If RottenTomatoes wishes to be a site for film discussion, and attract new members, then it should provide better structure to its film discussion forums, primarily GD. By that I suggest breaking it up by film genre, so as to not be the "nightmare" Monkeyboy describes. They do that everywhere else wherein movies are involved; at video stores, on Netflix, and at the awards shows. Rather than navigate through an unorganized forum it should be broken down into subforums like Drama, Action-Adventure, Sci-Fi, Horror, Romance, Comedy, etc. Perhaps with a bit better structure there will be better, in-depth, discussions. Otherwise RottenTomatoes will simply be a host site for the current "ingroup," and all threads created will be wherever anyone's fancy takes them.

Fresh! Introduction

Hello, this is Traci S Campbell from Chicago, IL. I am the host of the Heroes At Home Radio show and have just released my 1st book 'The C.H.A.M.P. Within' http://www.traciscampbell.com. I am new to Rotten Tomatoes and wanted to know if anyone would like to connect as friends. I am a firm advocate of learning and sharing with one another; networking and also would like to reach as many families as I can. You may know someone that would benefit from my radio show or expertise enriching the confidence of teens.

Add to list option?

So I guess since the Flixster takeover, they've removed the "add to list" option from the movie pages? Can anyone help me figure out how to add lists? Or are lists on RT just, done now?

I even tried creating a new list, just to test it out. Sure enough, it tells me "there are no items on this list. Add movies by going to the movie page and clicking 'add to list'", but of course there is no more "add to list option" anymore. Thus, it seems impossible to actually add new movies to lists now. Is this true? Or is there a change in the works for this? If I can no longer make lists, I think I'll be saying goodbye to this site. I e-mailed RT and got no response. Does anyone have the answer?

The study involved
Connecticut Asian Escort surveying over 3000 Americans from seven different cities, including New York, within two Connecticut Escort to three days of the attack. Participants were asked to note all the details they could remember of the day itself, their personal circumstances at the Connecticut Asian Escorts time, and how they felt. To find out whether the memories formed would be lasting ones, the group sent out the same survey to the same participants again 11 Connecticut Escorts months later, and once more 35 months after the attacks.

Hi

I have a question...why can't I start a blog? I'm a member here now, I can write a reply on a blog, but I can't make one right now.

Is this a 24-hour thing, a week thing, or what?

Fresh! Please sell Rotten Tomatoes

I just realized Rotten Tomatoes is owned by Time Warner. Please sell Rotten Tomatoes to an independent party so that there are no questions about its integrity. This will better allow Rotten Tomatoes to maximize its own value.
