You can't go wrong with Anthony Mann. They have a boxset of his gangster/noir stuff. T-Men, Railroaded!, Raw Deal.
If you want a fast paced one check out Armored Car Robbery. It's a little over an hour and never lets up. Early robbery goes awry type noir. Those are the ones I like best because they're quick, have snappy dialogue and never go past 80 or so minutes. |

I think one of his favorites is Sleeping With The Enemy. I could be wrong though, that is just what I've heard.

Serious question for French speakers out there: Would the plural of film noir be "films noir," rather than "film noirs?"

You can't go wrong with The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon. Murder My Sweet is quite good on its own, but is also shows a different approach to Philip Marlowe.
The Asphalt Jungle is a great noir / heist film. Out of the Past rocks, and it's interesting to see a noir that takes place in a small town, and later in Acapulco. Kansas City Confidential is one I've enjoyed for years, though it seems to have flown under the radar. Detour is a low budget B movie that made Ebert's Great Movies list. Whistle Stop (1946) is another one I like. I think those last three are public domain (free). Gun Crazy is about a man who gets in over his head due to a hot chick, and they wind up going on a crime spree. For neo noirs, Chinatown and LA Confidential are two of my favorites. Asphalt Jungle might be the best fit for you to start with though. Nothing but criminals in that one! Kansas City Confidential is full of gangsters as well.

Most of the essentials have been covered. I should shine a light on the American films by Fritz Lang, like Woman By the Window, Clash By Night, You Only Live Once, Blue Gardinia, Secret Beyond the Door, While the City Sleeps and Scarlet Street.

I think it would be films noirs, but I've forgotten most of the French I learned in school.

Films noir? Could be.
Hah, reminds me of this. Which is correct? "I will have three Whopper Juniors" Or "I will have three Whoppers Junior."

Gilda is a must, too. It is, to quote one reviewer, 'a wonderfully perverse noir classic...'

![]() I don't know if it was the first character archetype of it's kind on screen but it's the earliest one that I know of. You may recognize some of the character's it influcnced: Alain Delon in Le Samourai, Forest Whitaker in Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai and Leon in Leon: The Professional. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones off the top of me head.

Considering neo-noirs, I'd also recommend Body Heat, Cutter's Way, Still of the Night, Someone to Watch Over Me, Sea of Love, Miller's Crossing, The Hot Spot, Red Rock West, The Grifters and although it's a satire, Steve Martin's Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is essential for noir fans.
