Season 3 for me. It has the series' best showdown (Omar & Mouzone vs. Stringer), the best overall episode of the series ("Middle Ground"), the most interesting moral dilemma (the Hamsterdam affair) and features the climax of the series' most interesting drug organization (I much preferred Avon's to Marlo's).

Season 3 was good, but the ending of season 1 was very strong;

you really expected the "good guys" to win.

Also season 1 had the best McNulty and Bunk moments, and Wallace was a very underrated character.

I can see a case being made for 3, and certainly love Stringer's arc... but those four kids are the heart and soul of the show.

It is funny people are saying season 3. I found it to be the low point of the show.

While season one is last, it's still fantastic.

Hard to decide between season 3 and 4, but I'm leaning towards season 3. The last third of season 2 is probably my favorite part of the show, though.

I probably have to go with season one just because it was such a revelation. I've never been so immediately captivated with a TV show and for that it will always stick out to me.

OK, that's my answer.

I was taken in right away, and loved the first season from the first episode.

I like this, I'll go with it.

It was even more impressive because I'm pretty sure I had my arms crossed with a come-on-then-dazzle-me expression on my face. It's a terrible way to approach anything, but The Wire didn't care.

Which was what I loved about season 5 seeing how they turned out and their lives starting to mirror those of some of adult characters namely;

I guess it would have pissed me off from an realism standpoint if there'd been more positive outcomes... but man, some of those hurt.

Season 4 was the moment where David Simon's ambition to tell the story of a modern American city truly came to place. The balance between focusing on schools, politics, police and the drug trade is perfect, the character arcs are here by far the most moving (not just the kids, but old characters like Prez, Carver and Colvin), resulting in the emotional aspect of the show coming to the forefront and being at its strongest. I wouldn't change a thing about it.

I never made that emotional connection with the kids, which is probably why Season 4 is middle of the pack with me.

My vote is for one, although they're all amazing. To me season five was a little less consistent than the rest. The landslide victory for four is surprising to me. I was expecting a much closer race between seasons one through four.

Anyone who has season 2 or 5 ahead of 1/3/4 needs to rewatch. My brother just borrowed S1 from me and I was debating whether to stop him after 4 or not. I guess you really do need Dukie and Michael's arcs but the journalism arc is just so terrible.
