Wooley Presents: HORRORTHON 6

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!!!

Wooley has finally arisen...

And I'm very excited to begin my SIXTH Horrorthon, a minimum of 31 horror movies in the 31 days of October, and culminating with my FORTIETH BIRTHDAY on All Saints' Day!

As I do every year, I will be watching horror movies 'til my eyes bleed...

... glow...

... or just plain fall out!

And, as always, I will generally keep the horror to things Halloweenish: ghosts, vampires, werewolves, ghouls, witches, monsters, and various other nefarious characters.

This year will have a focus on some classics as always, as well as my first foray in Asian Horror (some of you may remember my expedition into Italian Gore-or two years ago).

This year will also feature less fanfare and less in-depth (read excruciatingly time-consuming) write-ups than in my previous Horrorthon threads, more akin to the second half of last year's 'thon.

A simpler thread for a more complicated world.

Hopefully, fun will still be had by all.

Personally, I think it'll be a hoot!

So please join me for Horrorthon 6, and I will try to throw some things your way.

The movies:

Revenge of the Creature
Cabin In The Woods
Corpse Bride
Paranormal Activity
Let The Right One In
Friday the 13th Part 3
Vamp
Little Shop of Horrors
Beetljuice

Ah! I tried 'Stage Fright' as two words, from the picture tag, but it didn't come up. Since I love Cemetary Man I'll have to check it out.

It's also known as Aquarius, for some unknown reason.

Every year, every Horrorthon, I have to do this:

I'm never satisfied with my Horrorthon without a little Bloodletting.

So here ya go:

BLOODLETTING!

In case it's not clear, click on the word "Bloodletting" for video.

I liked it.

Here, from Horrorthon 4:

Here's an interesting one, that received a lot of attention and acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival:

The Devil's Chair Trailer

It's interesting to me because this movie had everything going against it for me that I can possibly imagine.

First of all, it's modern horror, which has rarely inspired me.

Second, it's cruel, brutal stuff, which I generally reject.

Thirdly, it has CGI, which generally really takes me out of horror movies.

Fourth, it clearly has a pretty low budget, which is not always, but often is, self-fulfilling failure.

Fifth, I can hardly ever understand a fucking thing the lead actor is saying.

And yet...

After it was over, I suspected that I actually kind of liked this movie.
And a week later, I'm pretty sure of it. (Yes, I am a week behind on reviews).

Here is all I will say about the plot:

A young, blue-collar English yob and his girlfriend go to an abandoned asylum for some exploration and shenanigans, and he produces a tab of acid each. They dose and continue to explore and find a room with a strange looking chair-apparatus in it. She sits down in the chair and pricks her finger, right about the moment they both start tripping their nuts off. The drop of blood seems to "activate" the chair and it begins to do horrible (non-sexual) things to her. He is tripping balls on the floor and is unable to help her, screaming but uneffective, while she begins to become a bloody mess in the chair. Then she disappears.
He spends four years in an asylum for her murder, as his only explanation is what he claims he saw, and he was tripping his ass off, so who's gonna believe him?
At the end of four years, a psychiatrist gets him released, so that his team can take this guy back to the "scene of the crime" and try to get him to "accept what he did". Of course, he's the only one who knows about the chair.
What happens from there is a pretty interesting ride, in my opinion. But it gets weird and it is brutal.

Now I am going to say this:

I knew almost NOTHING about this movie going into it, and I think that is the key to enjoying it. I think if I had read about it first it would not have been nearly as successful for me, and could even have been a failure. The CGI alone could have killed it for me, especially since it isn't very good CGI, but it all worked out, and I ended up satisfied, even though this really isn't my kinda flick.

So... if you're thinking about watching this movie, DO NOT read about it, DO NOT watch clips, and DO NOT discuss it with anyone who has seen it or knows anything about it. I would go as far as to say DO NOT even read what's on the box. Just put it in and watch it.

And I ask anyone commenting about it here to please use spoiler tags if you even vaguely refer to the plot.

Otherwise, I think this is an interesting enough movie, and I am gonna go ahead and recommend it.

Always a pleasure, Wooley.

I found Stage fright on Ebay for £4.50. The most I've ever paid for a second hand DVD.

Julie Brown is a fox in that movie for sure...even if the movie itself didn't make a damn bit of sense. Kinda fun flick if you turn your brain off and don't think about it too much. Julie Brown's nakedness helps with this.
