I haven't seen the last three, but the first ones would probably be up there. However, I need to rewatch Animal House and The Deer Hunter. I've only seen the former once and I liked it, but didn't leave an impression. As for the latter, I loved it, but I haven't seen it in more than a decade I think.

The only ones I've seen of those are Caddyshack and Blues Brothers, but it was so long ago I don't remember. I've been meaning to rewatch both.

History of the World is a hilarious comedy. Just not #1.

I'm pretty sure I saw Cannonball Run and Escape from New York when I was a kid. Don't remember them, though. I've been meaning to watch Escape for awhile, though. Haven't gotten to it.

I haven't seen the others. I also think I put Gallipoli on my list of films I haven't seen from that year.

I should see if I can find Cobra Verde and finish off the trilogy.
I always enjoy Herzog's work, I just never think of watching them.

The King of Comedy from 1982 is classic. Scorsese/De Niro is a hard combo to beat.

Seventh Year: 1983

The Best: National Lampoon's Vacation

One of my favorite comedies, I've been watching and rewatching this since I was a kid. So many priceless characters and moments: Uncle Eddie, Aunt Edna, Christie Brinkley in the red Ferrari... the scene with the dog, the wet sandwiches. My favorite scene is still Clark's man-to-man talk with Rusty in the middle of the desert.

The Worst: Superman III

I admit I haven't seen this in years, but at the time, I remember being so pissed at it. I never liked the inclusion of Richard Pryor, never felt he fit in with the film, and the film ended up sucking. Being as weak as it was, the absence of Gene Hackman, and even Margot Kidder, feels greater. I'm not sure if I should revisit it now to see how it would fare, but this was one of the first film disappointments I had when I was a kid.

I wouldn't bother with Superman 3. Robert Vaughn might make for an adequate villain. But Pryor was badly neutered (he fits into this world about as well as a sumo wrestler into a Smart Car. And Superman needs his Lois. The comedy is stupid and the action is lame. Stick with the first two and you should be fine.

Although, this is also the film featuring the scheme they came up with in Office Space. For what it's worth.

I was about to post Woody Allen's Manhattan here, but I might just get it out of the way already. I haven't seen a single Woody Allen film, so there. Heck, I might also take Stalker out of that list and say I haven't seen a single Tarkovsky film.
Damn dude. Stalker is in my top 10.

I thought Superman III was bad but not awful. It was much too silly compared to the previous films, which had a good sense of humour without going over-the-top. (I consider Superman and Superman II to be among my favourite superhero films).

I've never seen any of the Vacation films, although Christmas Vacation is on TV every year (and I somehow manage to miss it each time).

Videodrome and The King of Comedy are excellent. I haven't seen the others.

My favourite film from 1983 is Scarface, although I am in the minority in thinking that it's a great film (on this site, at least).

I've said several times that a lot of films I'm putting in the "bottom" here aren't necessarily awful bad. They're just in the "bottom" of what I've seen or remember from that year. I haven't seen Scarface in a while, but I remember it being a bit disjointed and over-the-top. Far from awful, but not one of the best offerings I've seen from that year.

Fair enough. I find it's over-the-top quality to be a strength, but I can see how it could put people off.

S:III is horrid. It's a bad movie on its own, but it's downright embarrassing when put up next to the previous 2 films.

Vacation is classic, Supes III is ok, weak compared to the first two.

I agree with his lack of fit, but he still shows more personality than just about anyone in the movie. What bothers me most is that the first two movies really tried hard to establish the Superman canon. The first one is one of the best origin stories you'll see for a superhero, and the second one just built on that. There's an epic-ness associated with them that makes the third movie that much more disappointing.
