Perks of Being a Wallflower
Saw this film over the weekend - really loved it, a lot. I keep hearing comparisons to Juno, but a) I didn't think it was anything much at all like Juno and b) It was about a billion times better IMO (I liked Juno well enough, but this is in a different league). No one appears to be going to this film - there were two people in the theater outside of myself and my wife and they talked the entire time (they were far enough back in the theatre it didn't bother me). What do people here think of it?

it has been out a few weeks in many places - and there have been several threads on it so far - you may just be late to the party

I saw this last weekend as well. The comparison to Juno seems a bit off since this was waaay better than Juno (no bloated screenplay). I liked this movie a lot.

Probably. I scanned the first couple of pages, didn't see any threads about it... and here we are. Its not like there aren't multiple threads about other movies around.

If I'd compare it to any notable indie film, it would be Garden State. I'm not the biggest fan of this criticism, but the whole "manic-pixie-dream-girl" cliche certainly fits the bill...

I enjoyed myself in the film, but I felt like it took itself a little too seriously at times. The moments of casual levity were the best scenes. Plus, you have to love Ezra. I find it funny that people are saying it's waaaayyyy better than a movie like "Juno", which had a distinctive voice and a wonderful creative aesthetic. People still obviously like to hate on that film. |

Here's a thread with some more chatter & ppl who've seen it if you like. It's down to just 4x theatres in the Toronto area... I'll always have my 2x theatrical viewings ![]() Blu Ray in January... with the response at TIFF & online, I hope we get a slew of nice bonus features/commentaries.

Who is saying it is like Juno?! Just an awful comparison... they're nothing alike.

Word up. The only thing I can compare to Juno is the last death scene in Last House of the Left remake.

The problem is, aside from all that beauty, you're not very interesting. You're rude, you're hostile, you're sullen, you're withdrawn. I know you want someone to look past all that at the real person underneath but the only reason anyone would bother to look past all that is because you're beautiful. Ironic, isn't it? In an odd way you're your own problem. |

Saw this last night. Absolutely loved it. It's not everyday a high school-centric movie is released that isn't contrived and bloated full of unnecessary dialogue. This felt real and I enjoyed each of the main characters. Felt something for all of them, and that's hard to come by. Didn't end all cutesy either, young people making mistakes and finding some happiness along the way. Awesome.
There is some amazing young talent in Hollywood right now. Damn.

I guess I was the only one who found it unauthentic. But I still liked it.

Best film I've seen so far this year. Some of the specifics and a lot of the general feelings were spot-on. It left me feeling warm and nostalgic. I was disappointed it only played in my town for a week.

A story about a boy who develops new emotional depths over the course of a full school year with new friends & what not, can only really be filmed with some non-reality based scenarios imo. Lest it be truer to life in which case it'd have to be a television series without as compelling a pace. I think the soundtrack & the performances tie the film together flawlessly.

...btw, it's earning an 8.5 user rating at IMDB but it's well short of 25,000 votes to make top 250 list... vote for change! or something

Kidding, of course. But I am very interested in how much people seem to like the film. To me it was akin to Nick and Norah in regards to capturing adolescence; slightly misguided and cliched, but adequate in spirit and execution. |
