I think Mad Men is both the most formally and literarily ambitious television series that I've ever seen, and I say so as a person who has seen both The Wire and Breaking Bad.

Neon Genesis Evangelion and Paranoia Agent deserve nods as shows from across the pond. The other pond. The pacific one, I mean.

Mad Man was pretty much the best show on television the first four season. Lately Breaking Bad and Homeland may have pulled ahead of it. For a series overall it's between Mad Men and The Wire. If I'm picking the best show right now, probably Breaking Bad, which really just gets better and better.

This isn't people getting upset over the excessive adulation of, say, the Nolan Batman films. Or James Cameron box office jealousy. This is calling a spade a spade. Sadly. I say this as a card-carrying LOST fanboy for much of its early run and I watched every episode in its entirety. The show has one of, if not the best first season of any show (*dodges The Wire fanboys*) and established an incredible mythos, great characters, fantastic premise, and almost inconceivable potential for greatness. We were strung along for so long and it. was. all. complete. nonsense.
