The true secret in being a hero lies in knowing the order of things. The swineherd cannot already be wed to the princess when he embarks on his adventures, nor can the boy knock on the witch's door when she is already away on vacation. The wicked uncle cannot be found out and foiled before he does something wicked. Things must happen when it is time for them to happen. Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a very long time, but not forever.

The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.

I've seen both the FMA series and while overall I enjoy them they have a LOT of filler episodes.

I havent seen Last Exile or Baccano! though so I will add those to my list.

Baccano! is only 13 or so episodes, so it's pretty easy to get through it. It also doesn't hurt that it's insane.

From reading on the wiki page it sounds good.

If I were to put together a list of favorites... hmmm...

As a Ghost in the Shell fan you'd probably really dig Ergo Proxy, a post-cyberpunk mystery series about a woman named Re-L Mayer investigating cases of a computer virus which gives robots free-will, but she comes to believe there may be more at play when she comes into contact with the Proxy, a mysterious inhuman being which may be behind the virus. The series evolves (genre wise) multiple times through it's 24 episode run, notably later becoming sort of a road story.

I see you also like Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Perfect Blue), in which case I'd recommend the 13-episode TV series he wrote and directed, Paranoia Agent. Paranoia Agent is close to absolutely perfect in my mind, and is the sort of anime I show to people who claim they don't like anime. It's a mind-bending mystery with a huge cast of characters, though, the main plot revolves around two detectives investigating an assault case blamed on an unseen attacker known as "Little Slugger." While the case seems straight-forward at first, the questionable mental health of his victims forces the detectives to evaluate what's really going on.

Another series I recommend to non-anime fans is Kino's Journey, a 13 episode road story that is kind of beyond description. The tale follows a young woman named Kino, riding on her talking motorcycle Hermes, as they travel through the varied and peculiar lands of a retro-futurist world. Each episode is essentially a standalone parable, making the series as a whole feel more like a short-story collection (following a single protagonist) rather than an over-arching tale.

I'll contribute more later.

My post got lost in mod-land, but keep an eye out for it. There's some good stuff in it. I'll post more later, too.

Baccano! is amazing. One of the few animes that I would recommend watching dubbed.

Looks like you need to watch Evangelion. As love/hate as it is, it has some of the best animated sequences ever filmed. I think it's genius in just about every respect.

I just finished Revolutionary Girl Utena which was pretty incredible as a whole. There isn't anything quite like it but it requires investment and some level of... acceptance, given that it is a post-modern take on the magical girl genre (the director also did Sailor Moon S and R, the most acclaimed series of the show). It eventually warps into a very twisted and sophisticated psychological breakdown on many different characters and it's cool how they do it. The movie is a mindfuck unparallelled.

This. Evangelion is pretty spectacular. Try to find the movie if you can, it's the proper ending of the series.

End of Eva is amazing. I hold belief that the show's ending and the movie run parallel to each other...

Also, have you seen Mushishi? It's a much quieter and more contemplative anime compared to the majority I've seen. It's pretty damn good.

I second Baccano, good stuff. Durarara, made by the same people in a similar style(though different setting and concept) is also pretty good.

Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is another I'd recommend. Fun, gorgeous stuff.

I almost want to recommend Mawaru Penguindrum but it implodes ridiculously at the end. The first 3/4 or so of the show are great but the ending is so, so bad. And not in an awesome Gainax ending sort of way. Just bad.

edit: And I'll also back the Revolutionary Girl Utena mention. Even though there are things I don't like about it(I hate Anthy so much...and even that is somewhat intentional), it is very well done and thought out.

Hmm, I see you have Perfect Blue as an anime you've watched, so you might enjoy Paranoia Agent if you haven't already seen it. It's by the same Director, and it is also exceedingly creepy.

If you guys get the chance then check out "Record of Lodoss Wars". It's getting up there in years but the artistry was beautiful and it was kind of the Lord of the Rings before their was lord of the rings for many.

Much later there was a continuation series but it wasnt nearly as good.

There was also another side splint series that focued on Ashram the villain from Record of Lodoss War called Legend of Chrystania but I wouldnt reccomend it at all.

Gurren Lagann

The hot-blooded epic of Simon, a boy who finds a drill bit in his underground village which turns out to be the key of a robot that has a head for a body. With his gung-ho brother in spirit, Kamina, they use the robot to escape the underground and reclaim the world above from the Beastmen - half-human half-animal creatures that have enslaved humanity.

It is one of the most god-awesome things I have ever seen.

Current season, I'm watching:

Minami-ke Tadaima (new season of the slice-of-life comedy about three presumed orphan sisters living in an apartment & going to school)
Kotoura-san (high school comedy with surprising drama elements about a psychic girl who somehow never learned to not blurt people's private thoughts out loud, causing her parents to abandon her)
Tamako Market (Kyoto Animation comedy about a high school girl whose parents run a mochi rice-cake store, her classmates, the other store tenants on their shopping street, and a talking bird on a mission to find a bride for some Indian-like prince. From the same creative team as K-On!.)

All-time:

Urusei Yatsura
Ichigo Mashimaro/Strawberry Marshmallow
K-On!
Kamichu
Minami-ke
Kimagure Orange Road
Sailor Moon
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Azumanga Daioh
Ah My Goddess
Aria
Tenchi Muyo (especially Tenchi Universe)
Pretty Sammy/Magical Project S
Mobile Police Patlabor
Lucky Star
Nichijou (My Ordinary Life)

And many more.

Hmm. Mai HiME was kind of an interesting take on the magical girl genre.

Quote:

Like Futari wa Pretty Cure, it seems intent on bringing a Post Modern sensibility to the aging Magical Girl trope. This it does with a sly misdirection, by first presenting what appears to be an "ordinary" magical girl show stripped of some of the trope's more "fairy tale" characteristics. (There are no fancy costumes or over-the-top speeches, no real transformation sequences, surprisingly few pieces of Stock Footage, and from the beginning, matters are significantly darker than the genre normally allows them to get.)

But once you've settled in to what appears to be just an unusual Magical Girl show, the tables are abruptly turned and everything you expected is changed. The true purpose of the HiMEs, the role of the Orphans, the very reason for their powers and what they have to do with them — is nothing like what you expected. And unlike so many other Magical Girls, the HiME and what they do are not Invisible to Normals; some are in fact being influenced or manipulated by agents of the "mundane" organizations around them.
Can't say anything about the quality of the dub - I saw it fansubbed before it got licensed. (The Static Subs version was quite well done.)

I wasn't as fond of the sequel series, Mai-Otome, but others seemed to like it. /shrug

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I think Gurren Lagann is kind of awful and I'd much rather recommend the 6-episode OVA series Diebuster, which is made by the same studio as Gurren Lagann (as well as Evangelion & FLCL), but is better in pretty much every way while covering pretty much the exact same plot.

I too am not the biggest fan of Gurren Lagann. Just rubs that theme in my face. Been meaning to check out Gunbuster and Diebuster.

Final Fantasy Realm Reborn Discussion

The true secret in being a hero lies in knowing the order of things. The swineherd cannot already be wed to the princess when he embarks on his adventures, nor can the boy knock on the witch's door when she is already away on vacation. The wicked uncle cannot be found out and foiled before he does something wicked. Things must happen when it is time for them to happen. Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a very long time, but not forever.

The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.
