What was your context for discussing it in an economics class?

Collages are an art project that's easy cause they don't need to be good at drawing, just at cutting and gluing.

They could have some sort of message or simple narrative about what's in their collage while showing it to the rest in front of the class.

Oh, they're older than I assumed.

Perhaps show them some advertisements and ask them what demographic they think it's targeted to. Then tell them to design something that they feel would be a better way to target their own demographic.

They were commenting on how bad his van smelled, and he informed them that the Holocaust smelled way worse.

So do these kids graduate from your class, or do you just keep them until they commit a jailable offense?

Also, do you pay for the gas in the van, or do you get to turn in your receipts?

Very strange... So it's like an academy or pathway focus as opposed to a specific curriculum? This in the States?

Anyway, a few suggestions:

Do a "real world budget"- have them look up how much it costs to rent at three different locations, and to enquire as to the monthly fees for things like water, power, garbage, cable, phone, etc. next have then go to a local market and restaurants to look up the prices of things they like to eat and calculate groceries for a month. Next have them calculate a budget for extras and savings and have them determine how much is needed per month to maintain that lifestyle. If they cannot realistically/legally maintain it, have them decide and plan how to tighten the budget (e.g get roommates to split, cut back on certain foods, give up cable and have just an antenna, etc.). Might be good for them to think if not already.

Do an historical film every Friday with questions. Works best if you have them for a 2 hour block. Could base on American experience or world history topics. Need ideas? Let me know.

Something creative? Teach them haiku, have them write a ton, and do a haiku tournament in the class (best 3 of 5- have opponent X and opponent O and the loudest vote for each round determines whose haiku wins each. Best thing about haiku is as long as it stays in the 17 syllables it can be totally bastardized. For example here's a fave:

Loving you is like
Losing my keys for six month
I'm going nowhere.

I can't tell you how many "Your momma" insults can be put in haiku- shorter and usually less embarassing than a rap battle too.

Just a few ideas. Hope it helps.

Lots of great tips here, thank you.

No it's in Africa and I've only been teaching for 3 years, so I'm still looking for the right activities.

I see how that could be difficult. Whereabouts?

Huh.

Well I guess it depends on the program? There are international ones, but it is strange we are learning about it in a piecemeal fashion...

So does that mean you're in western Sahara, Mauritania, or just in the middle of the ocean?

Anyways back to the OP. Sleep with your hottest students. It's the 'in' thing to do and sexual education is best in these times. Who cares about genocide?
