9K: What to do? (now, Thief rates TV shows he has seen)

Well, 9,000 posts just sneaked up on me and I hadn't noticed.

Since I hadn't thought about it, what should I do? Any suggestions?

Congratulate me, ask me anything

Well, productive for who? working should be one, but I don't wanna think about that now. I'm on vacation until Tuesday. Thanks for bringing that up

Time with the wife is always productive, as cliché as that might sound.

I also enjoy reading most anything. I can spend hours on the web reading about almost anything. My wife calls it a "charming curiosity". Anything I hear, I would probably go on the web and check about it and read about it.

What else is there? house chores? ha!

A nice picture from my hometown... (not mine)

It's actually on the top of a hill, overlooking the city.

Anyone care to guess what are they called, and where exactly are they? Just for fun

Speaking of random stuff, my wife gave me this for Christmas...

Anyone else seen this show? I was a fan of it in the 90s, but unfortunately it only lasted 2 seasons. I was looking forward to the DVD and the wife surprised me with it. Great funny show, for anyone interested.

Wasn't Charlie Kaufman a writer on that?

You're right. Didn't know that, but then again, back when I saw the show Charlie Kaufman hadn't break through.

Well, to be honest, the only 2011 films I've seen are...

Source Code = A-
Rise of the Planet of the Apes = B-
The Smurfs = C+

I haven't been to the theaters since Inception. Frankly, in the last few years I've "neglected" films in favor of TV shows.

For those curious enough, this is called the Cruceta El Vigía (or Watchmen Cross)

It's located in my hometown of Ponce, in the south of Puerto Rico. It's actually on the top of a hill, overlooking the city. Here's a view.

In past centuries, watchmen would be on the hill, looking out for approaching ships to either warn the city of invaders or tell merchants to prepare themselves to receive shipments. In 1984, this structure was built as a tourist attraction. It's one of my favorite places to be whenever I go back home.

Looks beautiful. Although I'm afraid I had to giggle at the name of your home town. A ponce is British slang for a campy, effeminate male as well as a pimp.

Anyway quick quiz:

Meryl Streep or Helen Mirren?
Horror or comedy?
The Sex Pistols or The Clash?
James Cameron or Steven Spielberg?
Vertigo or Psycho?
Potatoes or onions?
France or Italy?
Noodles or rice?
Baseball or basketball?

LOL! The name of the city, Ponce, comes from the name of one of the early Spanish conquistadores and the first "Governor" of the island, Juan Ponce de Leon. You know, the loony guy looking for the Fountain of Youth.

- Streep is safer, but Mirren is more interesting.
- Horror, easily.
- I'm not that knowledgeable on English punk, but I've heard a bit from both. From what little I've heard, I think I would say The Clash.
- Spielberg has a more consistent resume, but Cameron has 2-3 of my favorite films in his.
- Vertigo, easily.
- Depends on the dish.
- I have Italian heritage, so Italy. Never been to neither, though.
- Rice, typical Puerto Rican dish.
- Basketball, but I love baseball almost as much.

Congrates to a super nice funny guy!

(watch some more 'retro' comedy films perhaps )

...and don't leave here. 'Voices of reason' are rare around here.

(here not her...doh)

More for the curious ones... this is called the Juan Pachin Vicens Auditorium

It's mostly used for basketball and volleyball games. It is the home arena of my city basketball team, the Ponce Lions. And actually, it's a block from where I lived, which made it all more convenient for me to go to the games.

The Ponce Lions won 3 championships in the 90s, which was when I was a teen, so I had my share of good basketball treats back in the day.

Also, Juan Pachin Vicens was a local basketball player (point guard), played for the Ponce team and the Puerto Rico basketball team. In 1959, he was named Best Player of the World after an international competition in Chile.

Thanks for all the congrats! I have a pretty good idea of what to do with this thread, but it'll have to wait for tomorrow night. My wife and I are taking care of our niece for the weekend, which is pretty much eating our time.

With this line as my premise...

Quote:

...I will review all the TV shows I've seen entirely during the past 4-5 years. So when I say "entirely", I mean shows that I've seen whole or that are currently airing, and I'm up to date with them. That means I won't include my occasional random viewings of Law & Order this or that.

When I say "during the past 4-5 years", that means I won't include the time when I saw Full House, or Knight Rider, or The A-Team back when I was a teen. But I might include old shows, if I did watch them within the past 4-5 years.

Also, I won't include reality shows or competition shows, so no Hoarders, Storage Wars, or Top Chef.

Finally, to get it off my chest, here are some of the shows that I still haven't seen.

The Sopranos
Dexter
Six Feet Under
Twin Peaks
Friday Night Lights

So... just to bring out the elephant inside the room, the first one!

1. The Shield

Yeah, most people here know that this is my favorite show ever and I would recommend it to death.

My older brother is also a huge fan and was always recommending it to me. However, I never got around to it. About 5-6 years ago, a local channel started airing it, so I decided to watch it. To be honest, I wasn't even paying that much attention to the pilot, but boy, was I hooked then?

I think it was after season 2 that the local channel stopped airing it, but there was no turning back now. I started renting the rest and also got my wife involved in it. We finished it probably 3 years ago, and to this day, we both consider it the best thing we've ever seen.

If I were to mention things I like, it's raw and realistic. I love the fact that people around the streets and at the precinct look like "real people", as opposed to shows like CSI: Miami, where every witness seems to be a model. Same with the set, the cars, clothes, etc.

I also like how the show doesn't pull a lot of its punches. It aims to the gut and doesn't back down. Stuff like...

girls being raped and killed...
a lead character being forced to suck dick...
friends killing friends...

...it was always great to see a show had the potential to shock and surprise without being "over the top". The show has excellent character development, takes its time to develop its plots, and has perfect acting to boot. I really can't think of a single bad performance within the main cast and the most notable supporting cast.

Things I didn't like? only one comes to mind and it was the development of Julien Lowe's character. However, you're so focused on what is happening, that you can easily forgive them for what did not happen, or could've happened.

Favorite Season: It's a tough call, but probably Season 5. It benefits from being a short season (only 11 episodes) and feels tighter than the others. Plus, the finale is perhaps the most powerful of the show, arguably with the exception of the series finale.

Favorite Character: I was always a sucker for Ronnie. Even from the first seasons, when he was mostly a background character, I always thought he looked like a cool guy.

For those interested, I did a thread dedicated to the show back in 2009. If you didn't read it, feel free to visit it here (or it's in my sig). Pics are dead, but the write-ups aren't.
