Jackal celebrates 3K Part 1: The Cinematic Bucket List

Sorry, but I've scarcely noticed that I have passed the 3K post level until recently. Then it was a matter of deciding what to do with it.

Finally, it hit me. Other people have bucket lists that discuss things they want to do before dying. Me, I think I can come up with a list of movies that I want to see before passing on.

Each movie will have a description talking about the plot and why I need to see each one before taking the giant dirt nap. Of course, you can comment and offer suggestions. Knock yourself out, you might give me a few good ideas. I will go ahead and list the first one and tell me what you think.

1. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

I love classic movies. Having said that, I am disturbed for some reason or another I have not gotten around to it. Considering that it ranked third for best comedy by the AFI.

Plot: Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) orders a first strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union with an aircraft. General Turgidson (George C. Scott) and President Muffley (Peter Sellers, in one of several roles) try to prevent a calamity from taking place. The aircraft crew is not sure whether it's real or not, but the Soviet government has a nuclear device capable of destroying the earth when attacked.

Why I haven't seen it yet: I don't know. I've heard great things from critics. Even my father is a big fan. When I get Netflix back in mid/late January, I'll have to check it out.

You should both see Dr. Strangelove. Soon.

There are a lot of films that I feel I absolutely need to see but never get around to, and take an insanely long time to get around to films that I intend to see.

2. Akira

Plot: Kaneda is a bike gang leader whose has a close friend named Tetsuo. This friend gets involved in a government secret project known as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago (from IMDB).

Reason It's There: I have not seen nearly enough animation, particularly anime. I saw maybe a minute and a half years ago where a teddy bear comes to life and starts attacking a child. I was disturbed, yet at the same time intrigued. Think maybe that Kanye West borrowed from this in one of his videos or maybe Bjork? Either way, after seeing the Castle of Cagliostro last year and Barefoot Gen the first time I was in school, I must bring myself to see this. It looks interesting, cool, and kind of awesome. Especially since there's a crappy American remake on the horizon and I need to see the original to know why they wanted to remake it.

3. Freaks

When I started my horror thread around 2010 or so, it was to get over my fear of horror. Along the way, I have seen some classic horror films (The Thing, American Werewolf in London, and Dracula with Lugosi among others). But there are still a few holes in my resume, and I consider the Tod Browning film among the most glaring. I'm sure there are those will argue that there is another film I am missing and it will be on the list, I swear. But this film is one that I have searched for on several occasions unsuccessfully. I want to see this one. Bad.

The plot for those who are interested: A trapeze artist woos and marries a midget. But she is only doing this for the large inheritance that he has. She secretly plots with a strongman to murder him and make off with the loot. But when the midgets find out, things will never be the same!

Freaks is the first I haven't seen.
It's easily accessible from the public domain, I'm just not sure if it's on my Bucket list.

4. Lawrence of Arabia

In doing Rumpled's recent director list, I realized among other things that I had only seen David Lean's Great Expectations. Good movie, mind you, but Lawrence is something that I've never seen. An action/adventure film that takes place in the desert. Sounds like I got some viewing to do.

The plot: Thomas Edward Lawrence biography that shows his career from being an intelligence officer to the leader of a guerrilla movement to a great general for the British army. It shows his life, warts and all, until his death via motorcycle accident at 46.

Haven't seen Freaks or Akira either. Wow. I have some catching up to do.

Wasn't a huge fan of Lawrence but I was in a loopy mood when I tried to watch it. Should give it another go.

Well Lawrence of Arabia is another I haven't seen and another that isn't actually on my bucket list.
This is because I dislike Dr. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzivago.

I have a copy of Doctor Zhivago sitting around that I picked up on Boxing Day and haven't gotten to yet (because it's like 4 hours and I haven't found the time).

I watched Dr. Strangelove in a film class once. I wasn't that impressed by it.

5. Doctor Zhivago

Plot: Lara inspires lechery in Komarovsky (her mother's lover who is a master at surviving whoever runs Russia) and can't compete with passion for the revolution of the man she marries, Pasha. Her true love is Zhivago who also loves his wife. Lara is the one who inspires poetry. The story is narrated by Zhivago's half brother Yevgraf, who has made his career in the Soviet Army. At the beginning of the film he is about to meet a young woman he believes may be the long lost daughter of Lara and Zhivago (from IMDB).

Reasoning: Thanks to Bill and Rock for mentioning another film I haven't seen. The 4 hour run time shouldn't be a problem (I loved Gone With the Wind) and the backstory behind the movie is fascinating. It seems that its star Omar Sharif was almost driven to a nervous breakdown due to the demands of the role and its director. Critical reception was fairly harsh upon releasing causing David Lean, its director, to vow to quit directing (ultimately he would do 3 other films afterwards). But it was Lean's highest grossing film, even though it started slowly. And did I mention this was shot around the time of Franco being in charge of Spain (during one scene, people mistakenly thought that Franco was overthrown)?

This isn't a closed list by any means so if you have any films I should consider, feel free to post them.
