Bourne 74% fresh... it'll get sympathy support for 'as good as could be without Damon'
Recall 59% fresh... eye candy 'but if you're looking for anything more you'll be disablahblahblah'

I'll guess they both finish somewhere in the 25-95% area.

I really do feel like Total Recall can go either way on the count that it might have rebootitis or it might be a refreshing take, and thats why I think it'll split critics.

I'm actually really looking forward to Total Recall. It's an intriguing story and that rare good idea for a remake/reboot. Arnold brings his own feel, so contrasting someone like Farrell is a nice touch. And if there's a single area of the original that feels dated now, it's the look and special f/x, which should be fresh and high-tech for 2012 now. I suspect 65%
Bourne got a strong cast and looks good enough to get past the change in leads. Probably around the same, somewhere in the 60s or low 70s.

Homeland (S2, Showtime) ★★★★ I love how this subverts expectations. One character refuses to carry out despicable orders, a villain bargaining in return for supplying critical intel doesn't quite play out as expected and a (nearly) torture-less interrogation becomes a terrific display of acting. It's a gripping and entirely satisfying season, but I don't think Showtime should stretch this beyond 4 seasons. --------------- Olympus Has Fallen (A. Fuqua, 2013) ★★½ Perhaps the premise is ridiculous, or maybe it's only preposterous because it hasn't happened yet, but the assault (and ensuing occupation of) on the White House (and sorta my senses) was a display of such brute force conviction that I bought it wholesale. That it was coherently shot (by, of all people, Conrad Hall's son) was welcome too. Sure, the FX aren't always top drawer and cliches ran rampant, but I slurped it up with a spoon nonetheless. --------------- Oblivion (J. Kosinski, 2013) ★★ While I appreciated the general lack of mayhem in favor of a more tranquil & cerebral pace, I was surprised to discover that Kosinski rips entire ideas from other, sometimes better movies. That said, the movie certainly keeps you guessing, the visuals r memorably sleek, the score kicks ass, but the resolution isn't one that encourages repeat viewings. Moreover, the story may reach for the heart, but its grasp isn't nearly long enough. ======================= The Walking Dead (S3, AMC) ★★★★ / Bullet to the Head (Hill, 2013) ★ / Lincoln (Spielberg, 2012) ★★★½ Brandywine & Lightstorms new post: 2013 movie preview!! |

Bourne 4.0----75 percent. Some argue that Renner out-Damons Damon.
Total Recall (remake)---65 percent. For the second year in a row, Farrell is part of a remake that is a step or two above average.

I think Farrell is actually a very underrated actor and almost always does interesting work even in genre films. A good example was Daredevil, which is pretty silly, but I still remember what Farrell brought to his part as Bulls-eye. He had an edge that distinguished his character. He was also the best part of Horrible Bosses, The Way Back, and carried Phone Booth on his back.

I'm interested in Bourne Legacy, but some of the recent clips are underwhelming. Between 65 - 75.
This is all that needs to be seen for Total Recall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mo20p706Rfo I don't care if it gets decent reviews. I've seen this film already. Last edited by Feuer und Eis; 07-28-2012 at 10:54 AM. |

Having a hard time getting excited for The Bourne Legacy. The spy genre is so over saturated nowadays, and I never found the Bourne universe to be that original or interesting. I am interested to see how Gilroy handles the material though.

Total Recall looks fun.
The Bourne Legacy will depend on whether or not they've actually found a story worth telling. Unlike the last two films.
