What Kind of Software Do I Need to Edit DVDs?

Like if I wanna to splice together the film This is Spinal Tap and add the deleted scenes to make one huge cut of the film, what would I use to do this? Thanks.

Are you using a PC or a Mac? Also, you'll need to rip the movie off your DVD into a different format first, DVD .ts files aren't really a viable option. For editing that much video it would also be best if you had a reasonably powerful system.

Rip the DVD using whatever software you want into an mp4 or avi or whatever the fuuck you feel like using. Then use something like Adobe Premiere Elements (consumer "easier" version of regular Premier) or any other multi-track video editing software, like Sony Vegas or whatever. Shiit's easy as pie, dude. Hell, I was thinking about doing this with Kill Bill 1 & 2.

I have a PC, a SAMSUNG. And Steveland, everything you said was completely Greek to me. I can rip a CD b/c when I put it into my dvd slot, my computer asks me if I wanna rip it. That's all. It's not b/c I actually know what I'm doing.

You can do something like download DVD Shrink which makes it easy enough to rip a high quality copy of the DVD. And it allows for some basic editing like pulling a chunk. But I think you would be much better off downloading a quality torrent of the film. Because its a very old film there should be no danger from downloading it. Then you have it in a high quality format which could be pulled into almost any editing program to do with as you will.

Torrents kinda scare me.

And what is the best way to burn a movie I already have downloaded? Like I download stuff from archive.org and wanna watch them on my TV but I am having trouble getting them to burn and actually play.

I'm a complete tech retard, living in 1845, so I either plug my tv in to my pc or I'll put the film on one of those usb things and then put that in my PS3.

I wouldn't be able to burn something to save my life.

you need to rip it first with a program. I suggest Handbrake for PC than use another program like Adobe or Sony Vegas to edit. Rip to a .AVI file since it's easiest to edit with.

I'll do some research for you, do you have Windows 7? What model DVD/Blu-Ray player do you have?

Are there any DVD editing tools you don't have to pay for? I'm thinking of doing this as well.

If you have Windows 7 here is the easiest way. I'm using Quicksand (1950) as the example:

Go to the download site for the movie you want on archive.org.
Quicksand
download the file marked MPEG2 or .mpeg
this is usually the biggest file to download, but it's doesn't need any additional software to convert to a DVD file.
Open up "Windows DVD Maker" built into Windows 7 Home and up
Select the file .mpeg file (quicksand.mpeg)
modify the menu's if you like and than press burn.
with my DSL connection it took me about 2 hours to do the whole process.
Tested well on PS3 and Samsung DVD player

there are, but they are not very good unless you have a Mac (iMovie). Windows Movie Maker is alright and you can try one of these, otherwise get Premiere Elements which is under a $100.

That was good advice especially considering you don't know your os. Research or you'll be in over your head once you actually start editing.

look at the sticker on the side of your computer. Or restart the thing and it will tell you either when shutting down or booting up. If you have a Mac (apple) click on the apple on the top left hand corner of the screen and select "About this Mac" and it will give you your operating system.

I know how to put my car into drive and reverse if I need to. Oh, also I have mastered park. Now, I would like to change the gear ratios and shift points in my automatic transmission. Please tell me how to do this. Oh yeah, I drive a four door car, it's black, I think it might be a Nissan.

I know it's condescending and blunt, but he's right. Imagine walking into a Calculas class and start ask the teacher Calculas questions and than he explains it, and he tells you to use the principles you learning in Trigonometry. You than tell him, I don't know Trigonometry where do I get those principles. My best advice (on video editing and copying in DVD video) for you is to get a Mac and I'm dead serious. Handbrake was developed originally for a Macintosh and works great on it and iMovie is awesome, easy to use and built in. I edit a duel angle wedding where one camera was analog and the other was digital with almost perfect audio sync. This was nine years ago on iMovie. If you can't get a hold of a Mac or refuse to use one, my best suggestion is take a class on basic video editing. If you live in a big area there might be a dirt cheap community class where most of it's grassroots basic stuff and it's hands on. Otherwise, no matter how much good information I put on here for you, you just won't be able to parse out the information correctly.

If you click on the link in my signature, "How Edward Got His Sparkle Back", I used a program similar to Handbrake with Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0. I'm not going to lie, the editing was the easy part, the tough part was getting video and audio from Twilight, New Moon, Knocked Up, and Dumber and Dumber into Premiere. That said while editing I still chucked a stress ball to my wall three times.

As for the burning the archive.org video files:
If you have Windows XP you can try the following program as a substitute for Windows DVD Maker.

Using a Windows PC, I have no trouble burning movies, but wondered how I would delete a scene. I show my students the film Iron-Jawed Angels and there's one gratuitous scene of Hilary Swank in a bathtub masturbating. It's pretty subtle, but my Muslim students find it offensive. (go figure) and I hate to have to fast forward through that long one minute scene.

This.

Honestly, you need to know how computers work and understand how to use them before you go doing something like this. It's not like ripping a DVD and using an editing program is difficult for someone who has even a basic understanding of non-linear editing, but for someone who doesn't even know what OS he's running? Look, I know I'm coming off as snarky and an a-hole but learn how to use a computer first.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but if you have a PC, you might want to try Nero Multimedia. You can edit your videos and then burn them to a DVD or blu-ray. I'm very happy with it and my DVDs always look great.

You would have to take into a video editing software. Trust me the minute fast forward is a lot less of a hassle.

So I've done this with Mr. Wong, Detective, starring Boris Korloff and when I open the MPEG4 video from Windows DVD maker it says "file not supported" or something like that. I've done it before with another one, can't remember what film, some old Philip Marlowe show I think to test it out and it burned but then it doesn't play in any of my players.

Here's the Wong link: http://archive.org/details/Mr._Wong_Detective

Yes, and stay far away from Windows Movie Maker. It's half-way competent for creating very basic short videos but for a feature-length project it would be a nightmare/impossible.

It seems like it should be simple shouldn't it, but it quickly gets pretty complicated.

The reality is, there aren't any good, free video editing programs. On the lower end of the price spectrum though, Sony Vegas is a solid program.

Also, you talk about file formats not being supported. This is where it gets complicated. There are a lot of diffferent video codecs, with different compatibilities. Some programs will like certain kinds of files and hate others. Sometime you may think you have everything right (not all mov files are the same! A pro res mov and an h.264 mov are very different), but you're using the wrong codec.

So yeah, depending on your tools you're going to want to research what codecs you should be converting your footage too. I recommend using MPEG STREAMCLIP, a free program, to convert from one format to another.
