I'm paying attention to this, too, because I just can't wait. Variety really liked it. Ebert's brief write up (as he's not ready to write a review yet) is the most telling in its comparison to the original reception of 2001. The reviews that I tend to dismiss are the ones that sniff of superiority to the film's themes (I'm looking at you, A.V. Club).

The AV club review seemed somewhat generous about the success of the movie's themes, and if anything granted that it was largely what held the movie together.

This is one of the worst "reviews" I've ever read. Does this person write exclusively canned phrases?

I will hold my breath until someone posts a more thoughtful review.

Don't die, Imp. As this summary appears to show, there is still much to live for...

An intense three-hour mental workout rewarded with a big emotional payoff, "Cloud Atlas" suggests that all human experience is connected in the pursuit of freedom, art and love. As inventive narratives go, there's outside the box, and then there's pioneering another dimension entirely, and this massive, independently financed collaboration among Tom Tykwer and Wachowski siblings Lana and Andy courageously attempts the latter, interlacing six seemingly unrelated stories in such a way that parallels erupt like cherry bombs in the imagination. The R-rated epic should find a substantial audience when Warner Bros. releases it Oct. 26, assuming critics don't kill it in the cradle.

You mean a review that doesn't have to beat some insane deadline? You'll be waiting until the movie is released to the public then

Okay, that's something. I always take pro and non-pro critics opinions with a grain of salt, but I get very curious to see what they have to say with original projects like this.

Have you read the novel? It's a series of enjoyable, cleverly pieced together genre exercises with some really hokey New Agey spirituality breadcrumbs spread through the whole thing. It's funny because a character in the novel actually disparages this directly in total self-aware fashion. I still have a few pages left, so my ultimate verdict will depend on how everything ties up.

Dude from Slant basically calls it one of the worst films ever whereas Ebert will most likely call it one of the best films of the year. Should be interesting.

Quick question: was the "typo" in the thread title deliberate or accidental?

Might have something to do with Slant being stupid.

I've matured a lot since my early days. Now I just hack peoples' IP addresses and quietly place a pillow on their faces as they sleep.
