A serious question about lady folk's temperature preferences.

On Parks and Recreation there is an episode where they visit Tom's apartment and the joke is that it's a girl's paradise with coconut water and assorted cheeses. But, for some reason his apartment is permanently set to 80 degrees fahrenheit. But my thermostat is set to around 70 degrees. It's not always economical but I've always considered it the ideal and in my limited thermostat related experiences with fetus jockeys it seemed that was their ideal too. Do the vagina abundant really prefer it slightly hot?

It must be a world wide conspiracy to make menfolk always slightly uncomfortable, because my girlfriends and girl friends have mostly all liked the temperature inside to be around 80 degrees, which is to me insane (I agree with 70-74 degrees being most preferrable, or even lower unless it's dead winter or something). I saw that same episode and laughed a lot at that joke, and thought to myself at the time my small sample demographic of women that I know must be part of a pretty universal pet peeve.

My totally unscientific theory that I've given about a minutes total thought to is that maybe it has to do with a difference in body temperatures. Or something.

Damn, you just destroyed my whole theory. Why can't broad generalizations ever work?

I've always liked cool weather, and hate heated rooms. I leave the window open even in winter because I'm a fresh air addict. Even when we were in NY in the middle of winter - I had a window open. As Billy Connelly said ' you can't change the weather, but you can always put more clothes on'. I love being in a warm bed but I overheat too easily - so I like the room cool so I can pull the doona off and put half my body outside the doona.

Maybe I'm weird.

Bodymass, I'm guessing. women tend to have less of it, so they should shed body heat faster. With well-toned and/or festively plump ladies I think this effect is a bit muffled.

I thought that as I'm 'well insulated' - but I've worked in offices with much bigger girls who have heaters under their desks and 'office jumpers' etc. I will say the majority of girls that whinge of being cold ARE thinner.

Weird thing is women keep in heat better than men. It's been tested that a man and woman at the same weight, height - in the snow - the woman can last longer.

So not sure why women get so cold. It's good for the skin!

I seem to remember hearing that women's bodies are biologically designed to keep more heat and blood flow in the core to keep the womb at optimal temperature. This means that less blood flows to the extremities (especially the hands) and leads to women more often feeling cold in a temperature that an average guy would find comfortable.

I feel comfortable in cooler temperatures, but I am very aware that my hands are often pretty cold and people sometimes remark on it when we shake hands.

Women tend to be a little colder nature due to their circulatory systems. If I may speak in very broad biological terms and in no way mean to slight my female RT friends...Your body knows that you are basically a walking baby factory. It constantly keeps as much blood flow and warmth around your internal reproductive organs in case, by chance, you just might become pregnant. Biologically, your body sees that as something that trumps everything else...including keeping your fingers and toes warm.

Doh...Tak beat me to it

And Lilly is right, multiple studies have shown just how resilient and tough females are. You hold in heat better and actually compartmentalize pain more efficiently than a man. You multi-task better as well. Actually, besides USUALLY being a bit better at math, having a keener sense of cardinal direction, and having more muscle mass...you ladies kick the **** out of guys in more departments

That said, my wife and I are practical. We hate paying the energy bill. Our house is warm in the summer with fans on through the day. In the winter, we keep lots of throw blankets on the couch and snugly flannel sheets on the bed. Our daughter's room tends to be a bit more balmy in the winter as we keep a space heater on for her. She's a flopper and kicks her blanket off every night, and we don't want her waking up cold.

I like it cool - really cool. I usually have it set at 65. I don't even turn the heat on in my bedroom in the winter.

I think it was a joke more about Pawnee than about women. Parks and Rec is probably filmed near LA, so it has the appearance of being sunny, but Pawnee is supposed to be a cold, dreary suburb in the midwest. That 80 degrees sounds glamorous to them is why it's funny.

Most women I know tend to like things a little warmer, but most still probably don't like 80 degrees.

Not really. Pawnee is a fictional town in Indiana that is probably (based on clues) in the most northern part of southern Indiana. I live in southern Indiana. 80 is glamorous...glamorously cool-mild South of Indy, most of us don't get much snow. We get a few bitter cold days in the winter here and there, but in the summer...well we spent like 2.5 months consecutively above 90 degrees with a heat index of 110 this year, but even on non-record breaking years the weather never really gets much colder than mild. You have to go Bloomington and Indy to get any weather that might be considered wintery.

Now, I know, I'm interjecting realism into a fictional place where quirky things happen in a small quirky town, but I do think that was a chick-joke and not a hick-joke

I just got to this episode of parks yesterday, and thought of this thread. I personally have never encountered this phenomenon of women liking a dwelling to be super warm. My sister and girlfriend both actually lean more towards the lower spectrum of cool temps.
