WW2 soldiers with different weapons
![]() I don't get it. You've got hordes of screaming Japanese coming at you- what do you choose? A pistol, a bolt-action rifle or a freakin' machine gun? Oh... I don't know... how about the freakin' machine gun?!? Or a massive flame-thrower, I guess. There must have been a reason for this. Rank? Or, Hollywood films are full of crap. Speaking of crap, Windtalkers was awful, wasn't it?

Nick Cage built the Machine gun out of smaller, lesser guns, and in turn, became the inventor of the automatic weapon.

It's all about billing. Nic Cage gets the machine gun, the guy making the Screen Actors Guild minimum gets a screwdriver.

This a terrible, terrible movie, but for seriousness sake...weapons were assigned in squad with most getting rifles, some having BARs (basically machine guns), and a few Thompson sub machine guns like Cage is sporting. I'm on my phone right now and can't see the pic very well, but I'm guessing the rifle in question is not a bolt action but either an M1 Garand or M1 Carbine semi automatic used in WWII, Korea, and beyond until Vietnam. The troops tended to like them. Some even brought theirs home to threaten the racially diverse neighborhood
![]() ![]() In all honesty, Cage was worse off as his Thompson was designed to be a room and hole clearer by sweeping and spraying. The Japanese used a lot of bolt rifles...they also did a lot of charging with 18" bayonets.

^^I agree. Looks more like the carbine to me. The carbine had several advantages over the Tommy gun.

It is the M1 carbine, semi-auto, not bolt action, a friend of mine bought one used a year ago. I like shooting it more than the full M1 Garand, Clint Eastwood's gun is a Moose.
Despite Windtalkers being a weak film, your criticism of armament in that screen capture is unwarranted. |

Sure looks like an M1. The fact there is no bolt visible just makes it more wrong.

Um, I don't know, range, accuracy, recoil, ammo management, dependability...plenty of reasons to carry different weapons back then.

I would rather have a rifle. I don't want to get close to anybody that wants to kill me. I want to kill them way before they get close enough to see me. Flame thrower? Yeah, I see some guy with a flame thrower, and I'm gonna shoot him with my rifle.

Ah!
"On top of this, he also mowed down two hundred men with a Suomi 9mm submachine gun, bringing his total kill count to over 700 men in under 100 days. "

But I'm not just talking about Windtalkers. Loads of WW2 movies have guys with completely different weapons. I'd still choose a freakin' machine gun.

But yeah, if you can make the mini-gun from Predator weigh 6 lbs and hook me up with infinite ammo and no jamming, I'll take the God gun. |

I'm fairly certain they didn't get to pick their weapons. You got what they gave you.
