4K: Jackal's Big Thread of Lists

I was trying to think of what would work that wouldn't require a ton of effort on my part, but was something original. Then the idea grabbed me:

Lists.

No. Not like the epic Cinematic Bucket List in my signature, which does get updated occasionally (just completed number 38). But lists of 10 things which we'll try to keep related to movies and TV. Because lists can cause discussion. They can cause controversy. They can prove to be interesting.

First list to appear shortly.

I love Amityville 3D - and Meg Ryan's character totally wanted to bang her friend's dad.

Yeah, I didn't want to pick on horror films that made them famous, which would have excluded Johnny Depp in the original Nightmare. As for Clooney, he starred in Return to Horror High. I was more interested in stars appearing in minor roles before most of us would have recognized them.

The show Xena, which was later on spoofed by You Don't Know Jack as Xenora: Queen of Battle, had Xena and Gabrielle as best friends with boyfriends in the early episodes. But later on, there were times where the two of them kissed, such as helping the other drink from The Fountain of Strength or kissing someone who was caught behind a Wall of Fire. You know, storyline reasons. They even joked with the trope late in an episode called Kindred Spirits where they pretended to be a couple. So to answer your question, Xena and Gaby were good friends but if you read between the lines there's a lot more than that.

As for Hercules and Iolaus, they were two hetero guys. Albeit, guys with their shirts half open all the time.

The episode that always sticks in my mind is when Xena enters a beauty contest and nearly wins it only to drop out at the last minute. A few other women drop out and a transvestite ends up winning the compitition!

John Hawkes played Teardrop, the guy in Winter's Bone who helped Ree find out what happened to her daddy. Paul Rudd? 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Role Models, Dinner for Schmucks, Anchorman (any of those ring a bell?)

Good list, by the way.

I haven't seen Hughes or Lynch's debuts. I'd have the likes of John Huston (The Maltese Falcon), Charles Laughton (Night of the Hunter) and of course Orson Welles (Citizen Kane).

Top Ten Cliches I'd like to see end:

1. The rote characterizations of people in horror movies.
2. The fallacy of the perfect day.
3. Electronic equipment (phones/cars/etc) stop working in a horror movie.
4. The final girl must be virginal
5. A woman must change in order to get a man and do good at work, especially when he's a neanderthal.
6. All people playing computer/video/D and D games are geeks.
7. The big final speech where the hero tells us what he/she learned along the journey.
8. The person who has so many days to retirement/wedding/etc. never lives long enough to see them.
9. The miraculous second half comeback in the final game...just doesn't happen that often folks.
10. The star who has to show humility before they can get the respect of their family just before the big show to save the city/community center/etc.
