How many songs has Scorsese gotten you into by accident.
Im not much of a classic rock guy, Im very picky with music. There's even songs I still wouldn't put in my Ipod, but I LOVE hearing on his soundtracks.
Im sitting here at work and for now the classic rock station is the only one that will come in. A Whiter Shade Of Pale from Procol Harum just came on, I'm like "Holy s.hit, I love this song." But I realized I only love it because I can't disassociate it from his New York Stories "Life Lessons" segment, where Nick Nolte is the painter and they play that song throughout the whole thing. I think it's one of his best used songs ever. -I never liked What's The Frequency Kenneth from REM until he used it in that part in Bringing Out The Dead, where John Goodman and Nic Cage are falling asleep on the pier in the ambulance, and the call comes in and he hits all the sirens. -Even though I was always a fan of it growing up anyway, those quick couple of scenes where he uses Red Red Wine from UB40 at the end of Bringing Out The Dead made me fall back in love with it all over. Goddamn, that could be his single most underrated film of his entire canon. Love BOTD. -I still love It's In The Way That You Use It from Eric Clapton AND Werewolves of London which he uses in Color Of Money. I could listen to both of those tunes every day and not get tired of it, and I otherwise hate Clapton, honestly. -I generally hate the Rolling Stones (sorry, I know it's blasphemy) but I've loved Jumpin Jack Flash ever since I first saw Mean Streets, and De Niro has one of the best "walking into any scene, ever" with that on the soundtrack. What about you guys? I remember on Thanksgiving we all got hammered at Scott's house and he put on the Last Waltz, which I never got around to seeing. There was one or two songs on there that I actually dug. That was so well-shot it's unbelievable, what a great goddamn concert film.

Sometimes I listen to Gimme Shelter consecutively with no narrative impetus.

I've known most of the songs but wasn't familiar with Jump Into The Fire by Harry Nilsson . . .

Two songs I used to associate with different movies and are now inextricably linked to Scorsese:
Love is Strange (Dirty Dancing/Casino) Then He Kissed Me (Adventures in Babysitting/Goodfellas)

The In Crowd, which is a lousy song, minus the part in Casino.

That low angle shot when De Niro is standing out on the steps of the Tangiers and that limo pulls up.
I think I've seen Casino over 50 times. I wish I was lying about that.

The opening of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore was the first time I heard a Mott the Hoople song that wasn't "All the Young Dudes".
Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love" is one I'll always associate with Mean Streets although Bad Lieutenant gave it a good run. After Hours was my introduction to Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?". I saw Goodfellas before I got into Harry Nilsson, so "Jump in the Fire" is forever "Henry's Helicopter Groove" for me. For the record, I think "Whiter Shade of Pale" is a perfectly classic song in its own right, but I won't miss the opportunity to second the praise on Scorsese's brilliant Life Lessons, a mini-masterpiece. And it's very funny now that Scorsese uses the Bach piece that the "Whiter Shade" riff is based on, "Air in the G String" (yes, actual title), at the beginning of After Hours. And I'll also give praise to Bringing Out The Dead, although I'll stop short of calling it a classic. The use of Van Morrison's "T.B. Sheets" over the opening credits was truly a stroke of genius.

I love the song "He's Sure The Boy I Love" by The Crystals, I'm pretty sure the first time I heard it was in Goodfellas.

I can't think of any songs that Scorsese has introduced me to, as I'm familiar with many of the songs used in his films.

To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie
Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? Love that song - although apparently they changed a bunch of the lyrics for Gangs of New York. Listening to the GONY version, there's a lot of lyrics I can't find written down anywhere else. |

I don't know but he's probably the reason that 'Gimme Shelter' is my favorite Stones song.

I pretty much got into the Rolling Stones because of Scorsese, and that was the start of rock and roll for me...
... and yeah, like post tenebras lux said, Gimme Shelter's my favorite because of him. |

Although not directed by Scorsese, Gimme Shelter is also my favorite Stones documentary. I still haven't seen Shine A Light.

I dislike that Dropkick Murphy's song
I don't know if this is considered blasphemy but I hated the first/main part of Clapton's "Layla", and never got to the instrumental ending. It's beautiful. Last edited by Shareefruck; 12-23-2012 at 02:40 PM. |

That's the Stones' song "Heart of Stone". "Love is Strange" immediately precedes it.
