I thought so the first time, but on re-watches, it's fucking brilliant.

The way the annoyance and tension build is incredible.

The Bride meeting Hattori Hanzo before he makes the sword and then again after in KB2. Seeing Sony Chiba at his most sentimental chat it up with The Bride still gets me to this day.

That's my favorite two scenes.

My third would be the entire wedding scene flashback in KB1. Less dialogue and more visual mastery.

I'm not a huge fan of the Kill Bill films.

They're fun, and good, just not really my favorites of QT.

I haven't heard of that one but I have seen Boss Nigger. That was made towards the end of the blaxploitation era when the movies were starting to glorify black gangsters, pimps and killing each other. By then it was just a parody of itself, which led to Coonskin an animated parody of the blaxploitation movies by Ralph Bakshi. Despite it's title, it's a pretty spot-on satire of the whole era and recommended viewing.

I can just see myself walking into the local Family Video and asking if they have a copy of Coonskin. No? How about Boss Nigger? No? What kind of video store is this?

Pretty sure any video store that would carry such titles would also understand why someone would rent them and see the appeal.

It's kind of a big video store. It's called the interwebs. You won't believe the kind of stuff you'll find.

-Best gunfight in years (the house)
-Favorite Jamie Fox movie of all time (I hate him otherwise)
-One of the best and funniest Sam Jackson performances of his career

Absolutely loved it. I still thought DiCaprio was miscast, but didn't hate him as much as I thought. Great, great fu.cking movie. Very happy, another great piece from QT, only director I still have a perfect track record with.

Between this and Zero Dark Thirty, at least I got a bit of a break in an otherwise miserable year at the movies. Think I'll check out Life of Pi before the week is out too, maybe go for the trifecta.

I missed that you referenced a specific video store. I read it as you worrying about being judged for renting those titles.

Makes more sense now.

Probably the same kind of video store that Quentin Tarantino worked at and watched all those films in the first place.

True story. A friend of mine was kicked out this store called Cinefile because he made a comment that made Tarantino angry. Both were at the register.

So get this, Tarantino gets angry and my friend gets the boot. In most situations it's the angry customer that gets thrown out of the shop first.

My friend was rational about it and said QT probably gives them a lot more business than him but I responded with 'more like the clerks were kissing some serious butt to their beloved idol'.

He was passable in Jarhead. I don't think that was a very difficult role, honestly. I wouldn't say "he killed it," but he "got it done." Same for Any Given. I don't buy him in general, for me he's like diet Denzel. Guy started out as a stand up comic and musician, he fell into acting later and you can see the difference.

I don't want to get into a whole Jamie Fox nitpick thing though, I just want to bask in the fumes of his greatness from Django, ha ha.

The most shocking thing to me was hearing that QT was sticking up for bland movies. I would have risked getting kicked out the store just to ask him if he was on crack or something?

The best part was that my friend had no idea it was QT until he saw his picture a few days later in a newspaper. That's when it dawned on him how much celebrities are fawned over.

That's curious, considering what he thinks about Merchant/Ivory movies. I remember reading someplace he actually found them "offensive" for being so bland and overwrought. Might have been in "Down And Dirty Pictures," the Peter Biskind book.

Must have been some other context, the thing with your friend. Maybe he cited a specific movie he was a fan of or something.

Yeah, I only know his side of the story.

As for Quentin, his yearly top 10 movies are getting blander by the year. I imagine he spends so much time writing that he doesn't get to enough good movies anymore. It's been a long time since he's been pimping stuff like Chungking Express and Oldboy. I believe Jennifer's Body made one of his yearly lists. I was like really man? Then he once cited Passion of the Christ as his number one of the year because it was 'the goriest movie he'd seen all year'. Typical reaction.

Post, did you say you also read the script for Django way back when? I read in like March or April, when it was still at something nuts like 340 pages. It took me 3 hours to read it. I thought I remember you saying you got to read it and it was a shorter version. Somebody else on RT did.

If it WAS you that read it, wasn't the ending.....

***SPOILERS**** (I don't do that "blackout" s.hit)

**WATCH OUT, IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET***

...a little different? If I recall, doesn't he blow up the house when they're walking back from Candie's funeral? I thought he smoked them all in that field, and I may be even more hallucinatory but didn't he knee-cap every single member of the party or something? I remember the sister getting it worse than she did in the theatrical cut.

I was bummed they lost that scene where Django slaps Stephen around and tells him what a piece of s.hit he is when he first gets to the house. I obviously can't do it justice, but it was a very nice little monologue and it really stuck out to me, I kept waiting for it.

That's what my buddy said too, but Im not sure. It would certainly have been an interesting role, that's for sure. I did like Jamie Fox a lot but I'm still damn curious to see what Will could have done with it.

Will Smith would have been like, "So Quentin when do the aliens come in to this thing? Am I gonna save mankind or what? Do you know who I am?"

I forgot already, was the James Brown song in the movie? I remember the Rick Ross (hard not to notice). It's on the soundtrack so it's gotta be in one of the scenes, I just don't remember which one.

I only got through 65 pages. I read the Inglourious Basterds script all the way through and found it better than the final product. This probably was a good reason why I was disappointed with Basterds and decided not to read all of D. Unchained.

I still have it on my harddrive though. My copy is 166 pages. The cover says in his typical handwriting, 'Last Draft, April 26th, 2011' The film went into pre-production in late summer.

This seems about right.

Got back a little bit ago, and I am pretty sure I loved it. Easily my favorite of the year, granted I have seen hardly anything. Just a ridiculously entertaining film.
