The true secret in being a hero lies in knowing the order of things. The swineherd cannot already be wed to the princess when he embarks on his adventures, nor can the boy knock on the witch's door when she is already away on vacation. The wicked uncle cannot be found out and foiled before he does something wicked. Things must happen when it is time for them to happen. Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a very long time, but not forever.

The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.

STFU.

Although, words like 'the' and 'and' or 'of', etc, are not included in acronyms. So The Dark Knight should be DK, not TDK. Like, The United States of America is USA, not TUSOA. Simple but most people, especially here, get it wrong.

The Lord of the Rings should be LR. Crazy but true.

Where's my flying car? You're telling me that tons of steel in the form of an airplane can fly but I can't get a flying car yet?

This is NOT cool.

You also only refer to it as an acronym if it produces a word, for example NASA or NATO. Otherwise it is referred to as initialism, like FBI or CIA.

That's not a rule. POTUS and SCOTUS are widely used acronyms that denote "president of the United States" and "Supreme Court of the United States," respectively. Both date back to the 19th century, making them two of the earliest known acronyms.

Yes it is, at least that's what I was taught in college. Just b/c something is widely used doesn't mean it is correct. Look at religion. Very widely used. Very wrong.

You're going to have to cite where you're getting this rule from, because there's no such entry I can find in the Chicago Manual of Style, the American Psychological Association style guide or the Associated Press stylebook. And Mirriam-Webster's definition:

Quote:
a word (as NATO, radar, or laser) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term
would seem to clearly suggest that any successive words, including conjunctions and articles, would be acceptable for abbreviation in an acronym.

And when your rule contradicts some of the earliest known practices being defined, it doesn't really work.

So for The United States of America, you write or say TUSOA, is that right? That's really what you do? Not USA. Right.

Also FBI should be TFBOI under your logic. I could go on but you get the point.

No. I'm the one saying there isn't a rule either way. Read the definition I posted again: "of the successive parts OR major parts." Either can work, depending on usage. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is not "TFBOI" (though FBI isn't an acronym, it's an initialism), nor is the president of the United States "the PUS."
