OK people, get out your handkerchiefs - here's a first-class tear-jerker - and yes - I cried, and cried AND cried - whew!
Great acting all around:
Sean Penn (SWEET AND LOW DOWN) plays it perfect;
Michelle Pfeiffer (WHAT LIES BENEATH) is right with him;
Dianne Wiest (RADIO DAYS) gives winning support;
newcomer Dakota Fanning (TOMCATS) may be the next Liz Taylor;
Laura Dern (FOCUS, JURASSIC PARK 1 & 3) is in good form, too.
A real sweet-heart of a picture that may even warm the cold cold hearts of the Academy - maybe!
Forget the critics on this one, just go see it and don't forget to bring the tissues.
A film so nice I had to see it twice.
I steeled myself against crying this time and still cried & cried & cried. Oh well.
Have to give a shout out to a great supporting cast plus cameos by Mary Steenburgen (LIFE AS A HOUSE) and Brent Spiner (STAR TREK: INSURRECTION).
Special kudo's to the music artists that capture the spirit of the covers chosen for this soundtrack: Sheryl Crow; Rufus Wainwright; Sarah McLachlan; The Black Crowes; Eddie Vedder (from "Pearl Jam"); a duet by Michael Penn (Sean Penn's bro) & Aimee Mann (Sean's sister-in-law); Ben Harper (Laura Dern's beau); Ben Folds (from Ben Folds Five).
This film is not only a family affair, but a true labor of love. Buy the soundtrack now - the movie should be released wide soon.
Review (#3): The only thing you need to get into this movie is 'love' people (yeah, that, and ten bucks!). Sing it: "All you need is love . . . " - and yes, I cried the third time round, too!
Time for a shout out to Sam's gang of affectionate mental defectives: Doug Hutchison (THE SALTON SEA, THE GREEN MILE) as "Ifty" the movie-lover; Stanley Desantis (THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE, HUMAN NATURE) as "Robert" the paranoid-schizo; Brad Allan Silverman (ABC's THE KID WHO WOULDN'T QUIT) as "Brad" the pal w/ Down's Syndrome; newcomer Joseph Rosenberg as big, sweet "Joe."
And don't forget to groove on a whole slew of great Beatles' covers from great contemporary pop and rock artists.
[Sam buys a "preowned" answering machine]
"Yeah. It's an outgoing message so I think you need to sound a little more outgoing."
